Swim
Comments: Way more traffic than I've ever dealt with. Was shooting for 40-45 minute swim and ended up just over 47 minutes. kind of disappointing. I need to work on longer distance OWS in the off-season. What would you do differently?: I would move more to the right and try to get out of all the traffic. I just need to get better at swimming, period. Transition 1
Comments: This seemed slow to me. This being my longest OWS in a race, I just don't think I expected it to be that long. Was a bit winded in T1. The guy next to me had racked his bike on the wrong side so it was a bit cramped. i made do. What would you do differently?: Get better at the swim so I'm not so tired going into T1. Bike
Comments: Felt great on the first loop. Hit my goal speed perfectly but felt like I had to pee. Tried to go on the bike but that wasn't working so I stopped on loop #2 out by the 202. Felt better after that. I don't think my nutrition plan was followed very well. I was planning on a GU every 30 minutes and 1 bottle f infinit every 1:15 but I didn't keep up. I was drinking water from my aero bottle and never felt thirsty. On loop 3 my stomach exploded. It happened within about 2 minutes. I went from feeling good to feeling horrible. I would say it was like food poisoning. Felt like I was going to throw up and crap at the same time. After that, I was doubting if I could continue or not. I still had about 15 miles on the final loop and I was feeling terrible. My avg speed dropped from about 18 down to 14.6. My back, butt and feet started hurting also. I wanted off the bike so bad. What would you do differently?: I need to figure out the nutrition plan on the bike in the heat. I'm going to try some salt tabs because I'm a heavy sweater. I also need to figure out how to maintain pace and get my calories in. These are thing s to work on over the winter. Transition 2
Comments: I was still debating what I would do going into T2. I really thought I was going to have to stop. Right after I entered T2, I stopped and took off my shoes because the bottoms of my feet hurt so bad. Don't know if I need new shoes or what but they always hurt on my longer rides in the heat. What would you do differently?: Not much. I was so out of it that I did the best I could. I had a hard time racking my bike because there was no room to get the seat under the pole. I ended up ripping off my sero bottle and racking it by the brake levers. I was dreading the run (I mean walk) ahead of me. Run
Comments: Brutal. Stomach never recovered. I stopped at the porta potty at mile 1 but there was a whole bunch of people at it. Went onto the one at Mile 2 and thought it might help, it didn't really. I was able to keep going at a HR in the 140's. Anything in the 150's to 170's made me feel like I was going to throw up and crap. I tried only water, gatorade, coke. Nothing seemed to work. It was so hot and my body doesn't function well in the heat. I just survived to finish this race. Not really the result I wanted but i didn't quit. What would you do differently?: I don't know what caused my stomach issues but I know I need to work on my run. I also need to do some bricks off 40+ mile rides over the winter. I was all set to run 5 minutes and walk :30 but I could barely run for 1 minute. Post race
Warm down: Drank one cup of gatorade and sat in the (hot) shade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Stomach cramping and the heat. Event comments: Great race but just wasn't my day. Even if I didn't have the stomach issues, the heat would have slowed me way down. They didn't have ice on the course for about 1/2 the run. They should have known since they knew how hot it was going to be. Hard to cool down with luke warm water Last updated: 2011-08-16 12:00 AM

Felt like I was getting sick all week leading up to the race. I didn't train much and tried to rest up. Didn't sleep much the night before the race. Got up at 4am and had a bagel w/ cream cheese. Drank a bottle of infinit on the way to the race and had 1/2 a banana in transition. 1 GU 10 minutes before the swim start. Should have stretched a bit but they had issues with my timing chip that took a bit of time.
Not much. My nutrition plan usually works pretty well.
