Pre-race routine:

Normal routine. Got to bed late the night before due to family stopping by. Woke up early, showered, and hit the road early. It was about 1:15 drive to the race. Found it no problems and got a great parking place.
Event warmup:

Stayed in the car with it running as it was raining off an on. The coldest race yet. Did my usual stretches.
Swim
  • 10h 05m 59s
  • 600 yards
  • 1h 40m / 100 yards
Comments:

No time to acclimate to the water. Made swimming very hard. I could not get my face in the water at all. Based on the rain and the temperature I wished I had a long sleeve suit. I managed to do the swim without cramping up or panic attack which is better then others did.
What would you do differently?:

Consider swimming in my long sleeve ski wetsuit to see how it works. It might help with the colder water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

For some reason I had a tough T1. Could not get the suit off and with everything being wet from the rain it did not help. Having the bin helped keep things dry but it did not run as smoothly this time.
What would you do differently?:

Practice colder rainy day T1's.
Bike
  • 47h 49m
  • 14.25 miles
  • 0.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I really hammered it on the bike. I passed up lots of people since I was one of the last out of the water. I almost pushed it too hard. This was my best event of the day.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

This transition went better but was still slower then I wanted it to.
Run
  • 34h 29m
  • 3 miles
  • 11h 29m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

I did not run well. Walked many times. The off road really challenged me as I was not expecting it. Also based on how hard I rode the bike and the lack of miles on the bike I walked a good chunk of the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and consider some off road training for these types of tris. However I think these are the exception not the rule.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a banana, granola bar and got some water. Was more rushed to get all my stuff out of transition since it was wide open with no security and I was one of the last ones in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

It was fun and added my 5th race for the season. Will have to consider this race for next year based on what the rest of the year looks like.

Performance: Below average
Suit: Wetsuit
Course: It was a somewhat mass start. We started 5 people at a time 5 second each. The lake was very shallow for quite a ways out. They put the buoys out shallow but wide. Most people could almost walk to the first buoy. I doubt it was 600 yards based on how I swam and my time.

Performance: Bad
Course: The course really threw me on this one. First 150 yards was paved, then went to trail. The trail had bark and was uneven with some nasty dips. Some people even sprained ankles on it. Then back to pavement. Around the 2 mile mark it was all trail\grass with some hills and mud, and some loose rock as well, with a paved finish.
