Total Time = 3h 21m 37s
Overall Rank = 55/76
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/11
Pre-race routine:

Stayed in Greenwood, SC, 35mi from race site @ Hampton. Next time stay at Park to save time (rooms okay w/ on-site restaurant).

Ate muffin with peanut butter and oatmeal (this worked well). Drove to race site (left at 6:30am); arrived in plenty of time. Pre-assigned racks & good parking.
Event warmup:

Road 6 +/- miles out & back; no running, & swam briefly before swim start.
Swim
  • 44m 37s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

Split includes steep climb from dock to T1, so my time was likely 42-ish. This is my longest open water swim to date and I'm lkay with it. I stayed calm and avoided much churn. Waited for fokls to get going before I started (good strategy). I did okay sighting and focused on comfotable pace. This was a clockwise swim with just a little chop. All in all, I didn't drown!
What would you do differently?:

Need to get better at bilateral and left breathing (for counter-clockwise swims & chop). Need to focus on getting facter turn-over during the winter.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

I had a good pace through T1 21/76 overall, stopped for a gu & water, setpped out of wet suit well. I did not leave my shoes in my cleats, but need to practice doing this and do so the next time.
What would you do differently?:

Take gu & hydration on the ride.
Use aero bottle.
Clip shoes into bike
Bike
  • 1h 37m 42s
  • 28 miles
  • 17.20 mile/hr
Comments:

I threw my chain twice going to the smaller chainring on hillls. This likely cost me 1:30 total (fixing it and getting back up to speed). This was caused by shifting while peddling. I kept a good steady pace and passed several other racers; decended very well.
What would you do differently?:

Stop shifting while peddling.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Top 1/3rd overall on T2. Good job of getting out of my shoes coming into dismount and jumping off moving bike. Took gu and water and should probably have waited for the first water stop.
What would you do differently?:

Take nutrition and hydration on the run.
Run
  • 56m 15s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty steady run, given my level of fitness and current weight. I walked the steepest hill at mile 2 and a short part of the finish hill. Overall I'm not unhappy with this performance. I doused myself several times with water, but only drank once. It did get a little warm as the run went on, but a very nice route. I cramped up at about 2miles, but worked through it.
What would you do differently?:

Nutrition and hydration on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Stop & walk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A few technical adjustments (nutrition & hydration timing, and keeping shoes in cleats), but otherwise just my current fitness.

Event comments:

Well done.
