Swim
Comments: i was ranked 106 even though only 104 finished the tri:) once again, i was surrounded by swimmers who were faster than their stated times and who passed me. i think i may have been the last in the water before the late registrants started. i was pleased with my time despite having to stop several times to let people pass me. i didn't feel particularly strong in the water with the frequent interruptions, but was pleased with my time. What would you do differently?: 1. register with an outlandishly slower time so that i start at the end and don't have to worry about being passed so much. i probably could have cut a minute or minute and a half off my time. 2. pay attention a little better so i have my stopwatch ready to go. for some reason, the did not do a count down for me like they had for those in front of me so they said go and i wasn't quite ready yet. probably only cost me a handful of seconds Transition 1
Comments: i ws 31st of 107. it was a solid t1. the timing mat was at the edge of the pool so most of the time was spent running to the t area. someone had knocked by helmet with my sweatband, glasses, and medicine bag off of my bike on onto the ground. i had a premonition that that might happen, but it was no big deal What would you do differently?: 1. i might benefit from practicing. Bike
Comments: i was pleased with my bike. i hoped to get up to 17 ave mph, but the hills slowed me. still, i was right in the middle of the pack for my age group, 7/13 and 2/3 of the way down the overall pack. i passed a couple of handfuls of people, many who had passed me in the water. i had 3 pass me who were the late registrants. i had a better ave mph than any previous tris, ranging from 12.2 to 15.4, so up 1 mph over best and first time in the 16 mph range. i think it really helped me to do three 15 milers this week. i beat my first workout time of the week which was a much flatter course. What would you do differently?: 1. drink a little less 2. keep doing specific distance training Transition 2
Comments: it seemed like decent t2, but i was 90th. i came in right ahead of jeremy, the one who had lost 35 lbs and who i had passed on the bike on the way in. he transitioned faster than me and left first. he was at 1:20/77th place. What would you do differently?: 1. get out of my bike shoes before stopping and entering t2 Run
Comments: the run never feels very good to me since i'm not a great runner as it is and its at the end of the tri. but my per mile time was faster than my two longer tris and close to the pace of the two tris before, and much better than my first tri of the year at roughly the same distance and without a bike segment due to weather. What would you do differently?: 1. keep working on my run and my overall fitness. i can run the 5k 6 minutes faster than i did, but i'm too pooped by then. 2. do some bricks Post race
Warm down: no gatorades or waters for the last finishers. i commented to the staff and asked them to get some for those finishing after me. got to treat EVERYONE with the same level of appreciation and respect, and meet their needs for hydration as well. i went over to my t area and finished my power aid and drained my poweraid and water bottle on my bike. i stayed on cheered on the final finishers What limited your ability to perform faster: i was pleased with the race and cut off about 12 minutes of time off my sioux center tri earlier this year if you adjust for the extra half mile of bike in the sioux center tri. i met my goal of keeping my time under 2 hours and was only 6 minutes off of my 1:45 goal i just need to keep focused and working out. my times continue to drop and my distances increase. Event comments: great race, kind staff, nice community feel. my two issues: 1. need to have enough water and gatorade for those finishing at the end. they need it as bad or worse than the other participants and they need the respect due to them for finishing 2. need a volunteer at the first turn. even though it was well explained in the prerace meeting, that is all a jumble by the time you start running and it wasn't clear to me or the guy in front of me that we were supposed to turn. if a volunteer had been at the first turn they could have educated us about the very nice and useful street markings and signs. it was a fantastic race!! #655, my second tri this week!! and i reached two of my goals in that i did a tri a month throughout the season (i technically missed august, but did the des moines hyvee 5150 last week that i counted as august and this one this week for september) and i completed an olympic distance tri. i'm still looking to swim a mile which i almost did twice this year, bike to work (maybe next week), and do a century ride. i'm also looking at doing a half marathon in mankato in october which i would count as my goal of doing a tri in four different states this year.
i set a goal to finish in under 2 hours, which was my goal in may at the sioux center tri (2:05) and which was a half mile longer in the bike. my second goal was to finish 1:45 or under.
saw lance bergman who is a traveling VA audiologists who comes to our Sioux City Clinic on occasion. He won our age division. His female friend was the top female time. Also saw steve ward from vermillion and john engel, our sioux city tri club organizer.
i went to bed a little after midnight after getting all of my gear ready with the intent of getting up at 5:30 am, but woke up at 3 by baby and couldn't go back to sleep. i left vermillion just a little after 6 and got there at 7:30 or so with a 9 am start and my start time around 9:54 so i had plenty of time to get ready. i listened to chris mccormack's (2010 Ironman Champion and 2 time Ironman Champion)autobiography on cd both coming and going. i took my bike out for a spin and made sure everything was working correctly. i noticed that my shifters click for the two highest gears without moving on one end and miss the lowest gear on the other end. i think its been this way for a long time so i didn't want to adjust/mess with it right before a race. i also attempted to get into my bike shoes/sandals and out of them while on the bike. i really struggles to get into them and couldn't get my left foot in after several tries. i was able to get out of them alright, but still don't want to try it today until i have had a chance to practice it. it could save me 15 or 20 seconds of removal time in t2.
i also met the 2 or 3 participants who were next to me in the transition area. all first timers. one was a 41 year old who had lost 20 lbs, one was a guy in is middle 30s who had lost 35 lbs getting ready for the tri, one was a 27 y.o. military who had returned from afghanastan. there was also a local 79 y.o. retired professor whose raced it several times and whose son-in-law was near the top last year. also met a couple of women from sioux city who were late registrants and one had the number 666 and i told her she was the devil:) they started at the end of the swim but were faster swimmers.
had an energy drink to wake me up and had a gu gel about a half hour before the race. did not stretch. i did "coach" some of the first timers and told them what to expect. that was fun. i could tell they were a little anxious
