Pre-race routine:

get up at 4AM arrive at race 530, packet pickup and setup transition (here i saw Joe) and chatted/relaxed.
Event warmup:

Some stretching, took my special energy drink at 630, stretched and went to the beach. No swim as the water mas much warmer than air. took one gel when the first wave took off.
Swim
  • 14m 11s
  • 481 yards
  • 02m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

first half went very smoothly, second half not so well but not bad. stayed out from the pack and maybe even in the back 1/3 of the wave. Swam with some other swimmers at my pace.
What would you do differently?:

train more for the swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

long sandy run from the beach to T1.
Switching gear was fast, but because of being positioned in the back of T1, i decided to leave the shoes on the bike so I could run more efficiently thru T, it took me a while to get clipped back on.
What would you do differently?:

practice mount
Bike
  • 36m 49s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 20.21 mile/hr
Comments:

I was esp ticked by mr pink bike/pink leopard print shorts who was blatantly drafting off of everyone he could. My race went well. Brought along one lg bottle with mixed carbs
What would you do differently?:

nothing - perhaps not let the drafters tick me off
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

quick T2
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 31m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

it was not easy for me to run in the loose sand, and as ususal, a ton of people passed me on the run. only water station was at turnaround; i noticed this so I drank 2 and poured 1 on me. got caught and passed by every FTC member, at the end it was Christine who gave me the mental stamina to push hard. we crossed the line together in a sprint but she started 3 mins after me, so her time was 3 mins faster - Thanks!
What would you do differently?:

not sure if runing in sand is necessary, but doing more speed work will absolutely help
Post race
Warm down:

quick shot of water and brief massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

speed

Event comments:

i was overly surprised by the number of volunteers & guards, and then the post race food (wow!!). not much in regards to activities. I did this race a few yrs ago when it was part of the Publix circuit and was very disappointed then, but this is a big improvement from then even though it is still organized by AltaVista.
