Swim
Comments: Swim was okay. The water was fine and while I'm not entirely happy with the way I navigated - I kept losing sight of the buoys - I'm glad my time was good (for me). I did get donked on the head several time, by my group and by the waves coming up behind me (bloody guys)! I did pass a few competitors from the 2 waves before me though - very happy about that. Again, my fitness pulled me through this swim. I must admit, I walked the last 50m out of the water. First place went to Jess (Swayerm) and 3rd place out the water was 9mins behind me (she then beat me on the bike by 2mins and on the run by 30secs). What would you do differently?: Not much. I don't know how much better I can get at the swim leg. Honestly, I feel happy with my progress at the moment. I am getting stronger and more confident. Transition 1
Comments: Went pretty smoothly. It was raining at this point. My sunglasses were useless so I stuck them in my mouth until I could figure out whether to keep them or not. (Kept them for the bike). What would you do differently?: Nothing. I incorporated putting on my number belt pretty easily so it's kind of worked itself out. Bike
Comments: In terms of speed, today was on par with last week and yet the difference in how my legs coped was amazing. Perceived effort was down on last week, which helped keep me ready for the run. I kept reminding myself to save some for the run. I drank every 10mins (I have an alarm on my Garmin), had 1 gel and 6 Powerade gel blasts as an improvement on last week. I enjoyed today's ride, despite the wind, rain and hills. What would you do differently?: Can't think of anything at all. Transition 2
Comments: T2 includes putting socks on! Last week the run gave me blisters (heat + water + no socks + tired shoes) so I took the few seconds to put on my socks. My feet were dry at this stage so it was easy. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think I like having the socks. Run
Comments: A stitch struck at 3k and held on until about 5k, so I didn't drink but it wasn't hot today so I was able to keep my cool easily. I enjoyed the run. It was hilly - but then that's what I train on. First half of the run felt easy. Running past the finish line with 4k to go is a bit disheartening. Sun came out then and the last 4k had no shade. I am a little burned. Finish line was very crowded. I had a small anxiety attack because I felt a bit trapped. But, 53mins today compared to 59mins last week? Much happier girl am I! What would you do differently?: I need to practice drinking while running but that's hard to do in training. Post race
Warm down: Lots of walking. Had 2 cups of water and 1 cup of cola. Stretched while the presentations were on. What limited your ability to perform faster: Crowded course in places but other than that, not much. Event comments: I had a great time today. After last week, I doubted whether the OD was for me, but now I know it is. And, racing 2 ODs back to back was okay. Last week was a huge learning curve. :) Burning through 2000cals is fun! I have decided not to be ashamed by racing as an Athena. If the category is available, then I'm going to race it. If not, then I'm in the 35-39 and finishing somewhere around 20th (Bring on Shepp 70.3)! It will be very interesting to see how I go in the long course on March 18. Winning is stupidly addictive though. I've decided it is dangerous to win because now I want to win all the time and as such put a lot of pressure on myself to go hard! I stayed overnight at my sister's place, which meant I had an hour's drive instead of a 90min drive. I had pasta for Saturday's dinner and I got a really good night's sleep of 7hrs. No sleeping in! I used hair conditioner instead of bodyglide and it worked a treat - and, no sticky residue for the rest of the day.
Did a short swim to test out the conditions. Saw lots of little fish!
