Swim
Comments: Decent swim. The water was great. 81 degrees and clear. They had the fast swimmers tread water and the rest stood back. The result was a good clean start. I was in the middle but didn't get run over or beat up. I was weaving a bit since I couldn't see anything, but ended up dead on the bouys on the way out. Got in a nice rhythm and swung out a bit wide on the way back but not to bad and got back in without to much effort. Got my picture on the website for the swim exit. Not sure why the times were so slow, but it was slow for everyone. What would you do differently?: Not much. Swim straight. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time. Almost cramped up putting my bike shorts on. Very delibrate but sort of slow considering I didn't have to worry about a wetsuit. What would you do differently?: Go faster, get a tri suit Bike
Comments: Right out of transition had a bit of trouble getting clipped in, then the hill going up to RT 563 was really mean. I ran out of gear early, and was tempted to go to the small ring but chose to stand instead. Made it and got going. Kevin from work passed my and started a nice back and forth lasting throughout the first loop. He passed me 3 times but I got him back at the top of the big hill after the 2nd turnaround, and worked hard the second loop and actuall put some distance on him the second loop. Really drove that hill hard the second time. Drank a bottle and a half but did not take any gels(that would bit me later) What would you do differently?: The speeds were slow but the effort was there. I need to eat on the bike. no gels was a really bad idea. Transition 2
Comments: Decent transition, had some trouble racking the bike than swapped shoes and got a drink and grabbed my hat and left What would you do differently?: Beat the dude next to me back to the rack. Its so much easier to rack an empty rack. Run
Comments: Got going pretty nicely. Got into a nice grove and my legs came in pretty quickly. The first loop was fairly good but just before the turn around to start loop two I started losing it. Saw Kevin at the turn around for loop one, was a little closer at the turn for loop two. The small hills just got alot bigger the second time around and I felt "hollow". By the turn around Kevin had cut the gap in half and he caught me for good just after the last water stop. I struggled to the finish. Got to eat on the bike or this stuff happens. But looking at the overal times noone really smoked the run but a 26:30/34:43 was pretty ugly. What would you do differently?: Eat on the bike, not hammer the bike? Respect the Olympic distance race (In a HIM I would even think of not eating on the bike and take it easier on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Drank lots of water, gatorade, and oranges, then load up my bike and drove home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Fueling, pre race and during the race just asked me to run out of gas and I certainly did. At least I finished it off and just missed top half. Event comments: Despite the tough run and the shift of start time, I thought they did an outstanding job especially considering it was a first annual event. Close to 700 people with the sprint and OLY races. Good food (didn't run out for us in the OLY race), great set of volunteers, tough but fair course (Great lake for swimming, the start time shift even saved us from too much heat, great prerace packet (with pictures) accurately showed you what to expect and a sweatshirt vice a T-shirt. Firefightes with the ice towels and spraying down finishers were great. Only complant, get more potta potties, 7 for 700 folks doesn't cut it. Last updated: 2006-04-28 12:00 AM

They moved the start up an hour to 7:00 am. That meant getting up at 4:30 and driving to the race by 5:00. Ate a bagel in the car. Got there at about 6:00. Picked up my race packet, went to the transition area, found my bar end was missing. The offical sent me to the Cycleops tent, they put a plug in and then gave me a water bottle. I go back and the offical popped the plug into my handbars and sent me away again. So we put and tap a silver plug in and finally I pass inspection. I set up my transition area and then hear the water temp is 81 degrees, so no wetsuits. Fortunately, I thought about this posibility and packed a speedo. So I broke that out and brought my wetsuit back to the car. I visited the bathroom to get changed. Got back to Transition just before they closed it, got my gogles and cap, put on so sunscreen and headed to the lake.
Went for a short swim to test the water. Good visibilty and temp. Of course with the sun, I couldn't see any of the buoys.
