Swim
Comments: Started to the right midway back, the first few minutes I was thinking "this is crazy, why am I doing this, I'm not doing any more of these" then I decided to embrace it. I was like "so this is a IM swim, its almost a fun challenge swimming in and around all the people". I got kicked swam over all that good stuff. I got really relaxed on second loop and thought I finished a little slow until I realized the clock was not changed yet. What would you do differently?: Get back into the draft earlier on the second lap. Transition 1
Comments: Left my wet suit bottoms on until I got in changing area and that kept the sand off. I lubed up with plenty of euro style chamious butter, threw my helmet and bike shoes on and headed out, did a real slow jog, didn't think it was worth raising my heart rate. Bike
Comments: Bike went good, I hit my target power but may have burned a few to many matches. When I would come up behind a group and pass them it took a little higher effort to do it legally. I had the worst headache the entire time, I think it was tension from holding my head up during the swim and then on the bike because it went away as soon as I got off the bike. I didn't stop on the bike, but that's how I trained and all my rides were flatter. Tried to drink 1 bottle of perform per hour and take a Gu gel every 35 min. What would you do differently?: Take in more calories, maybe some solids. Used only Gu gels and IM perform. Transition 2
Comments: Felt really good to get off the bike and get rid of that headache. I was not sure if I was going to change but I ended up putting on running shorts and shirt, laced up the shoes and threw on my garmin. Hit the Porto potty on the way out. What would you do differently?: Not change, I would have been fine with my try kit. Run
Comments: I felt good through the first 10k hitting my goal pace of 9:30 ish while walking aid stations, then I started getting sick of gels. I felt like if I ate 1more I would puke, so I grabbed a coke. My legs started get tired and walking felt really good. I ran / walked and ate pretzels and drank coke, I could have ran a lot more but I was worried that I needed to leave some energy for miles 18-26. My legs just had no gas even though I felt great, I would run a half mile with good form but would tire out then walk and I did this until the finish. I think I need either more calories or salt, going to figure this out for IMFL 2013 What would you do differently?: Take in more calories on the bike and maybe a little more on the run, it was to late to cram a bunch of calories 10mi into the run. Post race
Warm down: Stood in line to get my bags, walked to the hotel and showered. Drank about 3 diet cokes and ate a bag of pretzels and ate a bagel. Watched ironman live for a bit and then went to bed and passed out. What limited your ability to perform faster: I believe not enough calories, maybe salt. I don't think I over biked since my race power was 25 watts lower than my traing bricks and I ran much better off those. Event comments: I had such a great time I signed up on Sunday for next year, I loved the support from the spectators and though the event was run very good. Last updated: 2012-01-27 12:00 AM
