Pre-race routine:

Bad sleep. Picked up a bartender gig the night before and had problems sleeping. Woke up at 5:15am - had a shakeology shake and a Clif Bar, some vitamins. Loaded up my gear and got to the park at 6:30am.
Event warmup:

Did 200 meters in the pool - nice easy freestyle - the pool was way warmer than usual - felt good.
Swim
  • 09m 39s
  • 437 yards
  • 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the 9:00 corral - had to fight to pass 18 people - only one guy passed me (my brother) at the 250 meter point and I drafted him the last 150 meters. One guy swam head on at me - TWICE! Found it harder to navigate the lane changes as people slowed down at the walls, had to try to avoid people and ropes.
What would you do differently?:

Seed myself higher than I anticipate to swim - I'd rather get passed than fight the entire time to pass a ton of slower folks. My hip/shin injury did not effect me at all in the swim ...
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I still suck at transitions, this time was 176th in the field. I over ran my bike rack after laughing as my brother did the exact same thing. Struggled getting my bike out of the rack as it was wedged between 2 mountain bikes (the weren't there at 6:30 am when mine was the only bike on the rack). Put on a long sleeve tech shirt and jacket that took too long.
What would you do differently?:

Man up - race cold - I wanted to hammer the bike and not freeze my ass off. Put my bike closest to the rail if I am there first - not at the third position ... On a short distance maybe skip socks.
Bike
  • 15m 56s
  • 6 miles
  • 22.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I missed my right clip out the gate and had to down shift to avoid dropping a chain. Once I was rolling I was powering along. No one passed me on the bike. I passed a TON of cyclists. Didn't count but there were only a few fast guys out there by the time I hit the bike and I was able to reign them all in except my brother.
What would you do differently?:

Take the corners slightly faster. Hammer in max gear from start to finish. Leave it all on the bike which is obviously my strongest discipline at this point.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

One of the worst transitions in the field ... 296th ... I went to rack my bike, got it tangled in a mountain bike and knocked that bike off the rack. basically dropped my helmet and tried to peel off my jacket while trying to re-rack the bikes and in failing that had to slow down and re-group. Ugly ... took a swig of my drink , tied my shoes and hobbled out cursing at myself for throwing away two transitions in one race.
What would you do differently?:

Being positioned between two mountain bikes was not a plus ... position better on the rack (if I can). Don't ride with a jacket if I am going to take it off.
Run
  • 18m 33s
  • 2 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I can't run - my right leg is screwed and I knew this coming into the race. A few weeks ago I was planning a 15 minute run here - today I just wanted to avoid a DNF. I struggled - it was not pretty. People cruised past me on the first loop like I was standing still. Tried to pick it up a bit the second loop - at least no one past me on the second go-around but I was definitely gimped to the max as I came to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Run healthy ... attack the course with all the gusto I can muster. I would consider doing this loop barefoot - may practice that leading up to next years race now that I know the course route. Try for a zero transition.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked a bit with my mom and brother. Had a bagel and some water. Took a leak and got my sweats on ... waited around to the awards/raffle - chatting up people.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Our poor decision seeding so slow (mostly my fault as I felt my hip/shin injury would slow my ability to swim as well as run) ... my hip/shin problems that hobbled me on the run. My dismal performance in transition, twice!

Event comments:

I would like to do this again as I am sure I can greatly improve my swim and run times - and I SHOULD be able to fix those transition times. Hell I would even consider making an on the fly decision and running barefoot if I had to to save T2 if I had runners legs under me next time out.
