Pre-race routine:

Went to a b-day party the night before and while we went home early, it wasn't the most easily digested meal. But slept well. But up at 5 am, usual breakfast of shredded oats. Had packed everything the night before, so we got going at 5:45. Instead of cutting thru Buffalo, we went out to the Cities and back in on interstate. But ran into ridiculous construction that they should have warned us about in the pre-race email. Good thing I have an Iphone. Got there around 7:30 but it is a small race and lots of close parking, so no need to get there too early.
Event warmup:

Set up transition, hit the bathroom, ate a gu, and swan a little in the very calm, clean lake.
Swim
  • 16m 57s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt good. Same tired legs as Buffalo--odd since I don't kick much. But my stroke felt strong and there was very little contact with others compared to most wave start tris.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I need to go to master swim more often in the summer to do the speed work if I'm going to improve.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

One of my better transitions, which is still slow. But this was one of the first times I've been able to run right out of the water and to the bike. I use more body glide than usual and it seemed to help and I used the long sleeve wetsuit even. Didn't sit down, tho I was sort of wobbly.
What would you do differently?:

Toss the wetsuit faster. I wear socks and can't get into them fast enough.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 46s
  • 20 miles
  • 18.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Wasn't sure how things would go with my hip flexor on the run, so I didn't want to over do it on the bike and end up cramping in addition to being injured for the run. This was respectable if not great I'm kind of feeling wiped out from HIM training which I front-loaded this week but still biked a lot more than I would normally with a tri on the weekend. Still not bad in spite of some pretty slow uphills.
What would you do differently?:

If this was my A race, I'd taper. But I need to press on with the HIM.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

I ran in which is good. I have a hell of a time getting my shoes on, even with the speed laces. But this was another one of my better transitions.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing with the shoes.
Run
  • 40m 16s
  • 4 miles
  • 10m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I went into this a little nervous since I've been having hip flexor issues and I have been training very slowly lately. And this was the slowest run I've ever had in a tri--even Buffalo several weeks ago was faster. The hip flexor did not hurt AT ALL. I just could not pick up the pace. Maybe it was me being cautious and I could've picked it up? It was pretty hot and my goal was to run the whole thing, including water stops. Accomplished. I just didn't feel like I had anymore in me and I think that was right since I couldn't speed up much even at the finish which was downhill. But now that the injury is better I can work on the speed in training,
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured and be able to train more.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt dizzy coming in because of heat. Wandered until I found Ross and then we jumped back in the lake which was awesome.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury, heat, HIM training load.

Event comments:

Loved the venue, small size, the TT swim start. Lots of volunteers who were knowledgable. But they were a little short on the food--by awards ceremony time there were just chips, water, and granola bars. I grabbed some fruit before it was gone. I don't like hot dogs, but even those were gone--no veggie alternatives. Ran out of small shirts--ridiculous since I put that down when I registered in December!! Would have mailed me a small but since the shirt was pretty ugly (the volunteer shirts were nicer red color, ours were tan) I figured I probably would only be wearing it to the lake. No finisher medals. Short on the swag and food when it was not a cheap race at $60 even in Dec. probably cost more later when others registered. But the course and venue are really nice and for that I'd do it again.

Performance: Good
Suit: VORTEX full sleeve
Course: A square; pretty easy to sight, especially on the way in. (on the way out, it's a big lake so hard to pick a landmark.) Loved the time trial start. I had a really pleasant swim with minimal contact as a result. This lake can get choppy but not today.
