Pre-race routine:

The wife and I picked this race based on mostly positive reviews from previous years and because it was within driving distance. We headed up to Fargo early Friday because it was a Saturday race, and got into town around 3PM. We wend stright to packet pickup at the Fargodome, which went incredibly smoothly. The expo was incredibly well organized and there were actually a few freebies too. We decided to go to dinner early to beat the crowds, and got into the Olive Garden right away at 5 PM. After dinner we hopped in the pool for a short while at the hotel, and got to bed around 9. Marathon didn't start until 8:15 so we didn't have to get up super early, which was nice. The finish line and alot of the morning activities were inside the Fargodome, so it there were plenty of bathrooms and it was nice to be able to wait inside, as it was cool and pretty windy outside.
Event warmup:

Walked out to the start line, no real warmup.

Comments:

I've been battling my IT Bands all winter, and haven't run more than 25 miles in a week since January, and only did one long run longer than 12 miles leading up to the race, so the plan going in was to just take it easy and go for 3:45 or so. About a mile in I said screw it, I'm here to race, so I just ran my heart rate up to where I would normally run a marathon and said I'll either set a new PR or I'll blow up and finish around 4 hours. Around mile 8 my left leg got very tight, which tends to be a symptom for me of IT band issues, so I thought it would be a long day at that point. But I just kept going, thinking I'd run until I absolutely couldn't anymore. Around mile 12, my quads were not feeling very good, probably from lack of training and harder than planned pace. The last half of the race I was pretty much in the pain cave, but I was able to hold 7:4x/mi more or less until the last mile or two, where I slowed down a bit. Basically just held on to the 3:25 pace group as long as I could. Made it to the finish line in the Fargodome with a new PR by more than a minute! The peope of Fargo really support this race, everyone was so friendly and encouraging. This is probably in my top 3 all-time races, just so much fun even though I was hurting. Tons of bands and DJs on the course too to distract you.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, very proud of this effort given the circumstances!
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some chocolate milk, pizza, and cookie dough from the food line, and stretched a bit. Met up with the wife (she did the half), and headed back to the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Very limited training due to injury.

Event comments:

This such an outstanding race, I can't say enough about what a wonderful job the organizers do and how great the volunteers and the people of Fargo were. Just awesome! I hope to be back in a year or two to take a shot at BQ'ing when I am better-trained!
