Swim
Comments: Not too much to comment on except for the 3/8 mile run back to transition so I think my time was closer to 38 min. What would you do differently?: swim a tad harder? I was focusing so much on "taking it easy" to make sure I didn't blow up my next segments. In hind sight it was probably a perfect effort level. Transition 1
Comments: I really thought this was going to take longer. I wanted to let my HR come down a tad before I left but I guess my little run up from the water dropped me into Z2 quicker than I thought and I felt good enough to leave. What would you do differently?: lose 30 lbs so I am faster Bike
Comments: The previous two weekends I rode 75 miles and 80 miles on Saturday. I think this helped the mental aspect of what I was accomplishing greatly. 5 hours on the bike last Saturday, I really thought I lost my mind at one point. It made a 3 hour bike segment seem like a walk in park even though it wasn't. I kept thinking I wanted to be at about a 70% effort level and other than a few choice spots I pretty much maintained the level. What would you do differently?: Ride lotz more. Transition 2
Comments: Not much to say, again, thanks to some good advice I wanted to get my HR down to a manageable level. All suited up I took a few moments to take a deep breathe and mentally prepare myself for the inevitable suffering that I was about to ensue What would you do differently?: lose 30 lbs so I am faster Run
Comments: The course was about .7 miles longer according to my Garmin. I would have benefited from trail shoes. But oh well, I had a blast. My plan was to walk the aid stations but it eventually led to walking through the mud puddles for safety. Everything went well. I had a hand held with nuun and 3 gels and I grazed on some H20. Mentally this went okay for me. When the darkness came I was sort of prepared and just kept running. At one point I said to myself, "crap...I have done these distances but I have never put them together" I quieted myself by responding, "you won't be able to say that after today". My feet started to hurt. But my muscles were still good and never cramped. I thought about TheClaaaw and how he would fight Shatner and that made me laugh. I thought about my cousin finishing the leadville 100 and kept running. I eventually came to the end and people cheered...I cheered back at them telling them they were the true heroes. People laughed...I laughed, I had a blast. What would you do differently?: lose 30 lbs so I am faster Post race
Warm down: I don't recall. I tried to eat something but just couldn't. Event comments: I really enjoyed myself. As far as races go, this gave me that "no frills" feeling but there were plenty of volunteers and lots of police activity directing traffic. I would do this race again. This was my first HIM.
Woke up at 3:30 am. Slugged down some coffee and although I wasn't really hungry for my typical English muffin and PB ritual, I decided to make it anyway thinking I would just eat it on the road. Brian arrived at 4:15 and we loaded is bike and took off
The only warming up I did was in the port-o-potty
