Swim
Comments: This was my first open water swim race, and second ever open water swim. First ever open water swim was day before to check out the lake. Based on distance, my goal was 10 minutes, so at 10:06 I was very happy. Timing mat was at the top of a little dirt hill, so I was out of the water under 10 minutes. Started the race at the far right, but made my way quickly to the middle of the crowd, getting bumped, kicked and slapped...suprisingly it was a lot of fun. What would you do differently?: Would have started closer to the buoy line, and maybe pushed a little harder, but I felt the swim went good. Transition 1
Comments: Transition went slow after running up the dirt hill from the lake, by feet were covered in dirt, leaves and grass. I took a small towel to clean off my feet. Once cleaned, I put on socks, bike shoes, helmet, shirt and sunglasses, and off I went. What would you do differently?: Have a tri-suit, so that I didn't need to put on a shirt. Need to try training without socks, so that I don't have to put some on for short races. Bike
Comments: Bike went good. I was cruising along and only got passed once, at the very beginning. At the turn around is when I realized we had a slight tailwind going out. Wind was picking up and we had a pretty strong head wind coming back. I averaged almost 8 MPH slower coming back and it was more downhill. :( This was the first race using my clip-on aerobars, and I was glad to have them in that wind. What would you do differently?: Could have pushed harder, but was worried about the run. I felt comfortable the whole time, so I know I had more left in the tank. Need to drink more, I only drank maybe a quarter of my accelerade. Transition 2
Comments: This transition went faster. Switched shoes, put on my number belt and hat quickly. Only thing that slowed me down a little was drinking a Gel in transition. What would you do differently?: Would have taken the gel on the last part of the bike. Run
Comments: Course was a dirt trail, and it was hot. I felt like I was barely shuffling along. ABQkid caught me about the halfway point and we ran together for about a minute before he took off. I felt kinda sluggish and at the end I caught up to a guy with my age group on his leg, and I was mad that I couldn't pass him. What would you do differently?: Drink more. There was like 3 aid stations that had water, but I only took one sip. As hot as it was, I should have had more to drink. Post race
Warm down: Finished grabbed a water, and met up with the other members of my tri group and stood around cheering for people we know. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not sure. Probably lack of experience, especially with transitions. This was only my second tri. Event comments: I thought the race was good, and well organized. Everything seemed to go smoothly. ABQKid and I stayed in Roswell, about 20 miles from Dexter. Woke up about 5:30am, ate a bagel with Peanut butter, drank some gatorade and loaded up our bikes and gear and left the hotel.
They had assigned transition spots, so we found ours and setup. We did some light jogging about 1/4 mile and did some high knees to help loosen up. Stripped down and went to our wave area by the lake.
