Pre-race routine:

Ate fish and pasta and salad the night before. Woke up early bc I had to drive from Prosper, about 70 minutes away. Got about 6 hours sleep, probably not enough. Ate a power bar before I left, 2 bananas and some coffee on the drive. A small amount of gatorade, didn't drink enough pre-race. Arrived in time to pee, but not enough time for a pre-race poop and I'm afraid it cost me. Started in a corral behind the assigned corral. Just didn't give myself enough time to get to the race.
Event warmup:

None.

Comments:

First 6 miles were very smooth. Hit my pace after just one mile. Would later find out we had a tailwind. Felt good, running consistent sub-9 miles. The brick-surface at the old stockyards was a bit rough but the scenery was still pretty cool.

Then we turned south directly into the wind and the day got a bit worse. The gusts were brutal and we hit a long climb b/n miles 8-9 heading into downtown. I could tell it hurt some people. The half-runners broke off around mile 10 and the course thinned out making it tougher to find someone to draft off of.

Crossed the halfway mark at 1:56:29. Well on-pace to PR. Intestinal issues caught up with me at mile 15 and I had to stop. Lost about 4 minutes there. Hit the trails about mile 18, nice scenery. The last 10 k was rather nice but I clearly pushed too hard from mile 19-23. I spent too much energy trying to hit that PR and I slowed dramatically b/n mile 23-24. This is also when a strong cross-wind gust pushed my left foot into my right leg, almost sending me to the ground.

Once I realized a PR wasn't gonna happen I backed off and walked about 1/2 mile b/n mile 24-25. Started back into a run at mile marker 25 and brought it home.
What would you do differently?:

Give myself more time, more sleep. Probably stay close to the start line. Gotta figure out the gut issues. Need to spend some time in the bathroom before the race, not during. Clearly cost me a PR this time. The course was hillier than expected but the wind was a much bigger problem. I exerted a lot of energy fighting it.
Post race
Warm down:

Bottle of water, can of fruit, yogurt, then lunch at the folks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bathroom break. Weather conditions. Avg HR 167 seems a bit high but I tolerated it well. Didn't really get tired. Was more limited by sore/tight/tired legs. 185 max HR, and still had a 1 minute recovery of 26 beats, so my hydration seemed adequate although probably low. Took in about 20-30 carb (candy bars) every 21-23 minutes.

Event comments:

Very enjoyable race. Challenging. Plenty of hills and if the wind kicks up like it did today it will really test you. Well organized, outstanding volunteers.
