Swim
Comments: Jumped off the boat with a scissors kick to try and not go too deep, start moving. The water on one end of the course seemed rusty, visibility was considerably less in the harbor than it was on the lake side, but comparable to the city lakes I'm used to. Got kicked in the face and my swim cap started to come off, minor distraction, finally fell off which was too bad because I liked the race logo on it. Goggles got very foggy on the 3rd side, flipped to my back and dunked them. Had to do that again to stop the leak. Surged past a couple people swimming shoulder to shoulder. Hit the turn bouys very tight, but ended up a little inside the course twice. Don't know if the course was long, or if this was just the start of my slow day. What would you do differently?: Rinse goggles beforehand. Transition 1
Comments: Floor was slippery and cold. Bike
Comments: Early on the clouds were out and it was a grey day. On a section of the course that was very close to the lake, there was an area half a mile out in the lake where the sun was shining through about the size of a little baseball field, just a column of sunlight, turned the water right there gold. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Knew the wind was going to suck coming back, so tried to save energy for that trip. Averaged 21.8 on the way out, and slowed way down after the turn-around. Had trouble keeping my speed up at all. Noticed my stomach not reacting properly after my second gel. What would you do differently?: maybe push harder on the way out, using the wind more to my benefit. Not do all of my training rides out against the wind and home with the wind. Bring leftovers to eat all weekend. Transition 2
Comments: The cold floor felt good now. Arm coolers up my jersey, gels in my pocket while moving. What would you do differently?: Not put my sock on upside down. Run
Comments: When did it get so hot? Dropped my arm coolers somewhere, never did find them. I liked the three loop course, it gave me easily recognizable goals. Thought about taking a gel right away, but my stomach had other thoughts. Didn't know if I needed to puke of go to the bathroom, so about mile 4 I tried to puke, didn't happen, ran four steps and lost it behind a rock. Tried to use the bathroom but couldn't, oh well. My stomach felt better after that, but my legs wouldn't cooperated, had to really concentrate to run like I wasn't hurting, but that never lasted long, my brain was tired. Felt better the last few miles, but couldn't get up and go, finished with a nice kick and passed 3 people in the last half mile. What would you do differently?: Eat my own food the days leading up to the race, more race pace training, run more all year. Spring marathon. Post race
Warm down: Walk, stretch, sit on the cold floor of the hockey rink. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of base, heat and wind. Event comments: I really liked this experience. Family could see the entire swim, and see me at multiple spots on the run course which they enjoyed. The course was fun, not confusing at all once you were out there. The packet pick up could be orginized better, but I got there early so it was fine for me. I think the water stops were where they were to keep litter out of the lake. Already signed up for next year. Last updated: 2012-03-04 12:00 AM
