Run
Comments: First 7 miles were great. Some hills, but mostly flat. Had a great 10K split - 48:57. Took a gel at mile 6 with water. The second half of the race was a challenge. Training volume the last couple weeks has been very low due to illness, so the base line endurance just wasn't there. I stopped and walked for about 1 minute in mile 10 and 11, I was just tired. In mile 12 I had a very short lived second wind, but had to walk several times to finish out the race. Was feeling a little light headed, so I think I was very low on fuel. What would you do differently?: Rethink nutrition strategy. There was no sports drink at the aid stations - even in the second half of the race. Reading the course material again it mentions just providing water. Knowing this now I would have packed another gel to take about mile 10 to get me thru the end of the race. Post race
Warm down: Walked - a lot. IT band on the left leg was very tight and some tenderness in the arch of my left foot. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training volume. Event comments: Good course - nice to be on the streets. Course was well marked and had plenty of police to block intersections. Would like to see sports drink of some sort at the aid stations, even just in the second half of the race. Last updated: 2012-03-05 12:00 AM

Drake Relays On-the-Roads

Overcast
Overall Rank = 536/1362
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 77/120
Typical pre-race ritual. Woke up at 5 and immediately started eating - grilled turkey breast, 2 eggs, melon and about 24 oz. of water. Got dressed, in the car and drove to Des Moines. Luckily I was able to find a parking spot close since the Drake Relays were going on. Located porto's and warmed up.
15 minutes easy jog around the campus and active stretching.
