Swim
Comments: Water was definitely not as still as I had seen video of in the previous years. During the week leading up to the race, I didn't get in a practice swim until Thursday because of the rough chop, big waves and strong current. It was much better on race day but from what I heard, a lot of people struggled with it. I was very concerned about jelly fish and I'm severely allergic. I didn't see one during the race (water wasn't that clear) and if they were there, I didn't get stung. What would you do differently?: Position myself up closer to the front 1/3. It's hard to tell when you're on the beach where you're placing yourself; think I was too far back. Transition 1
Comments: I was not in this to race it as it was my first IM. It was all about enjoying the day and not getting flustered. I swam in my bathing suit under my wet suit so I had to do a full change in T1. Then I had to use the bathroom. :-) What would you do differently?: Find tri suit that is comfortable under wet suit and wear that all day. Bike
Comments: I kept myself checked during the bike and never got caught up in what anyone else was doing. I was fine with people passing me because I wanted a solid, strong run. My goal was to finish and finish safely. I don't think I've ever been so happy when I came down into the transition area and got off that bike. What would you do differently?: Make my stop at special needs quicker. Transition 2
Comments: I had to do a change again here as I rode in bike shorts due to saddle issues I could never get under control during training. Volunteer was great but I was very organized and would probably have been quicker if I didn't have her trying to help. It messed up my routine a little bit. What would you do differently?: Find a tri kit I can wear from the start. Run
Comments: Left T2 feeling GREAT and so excited to be on my own two feet!! I felt so good and didn't want to walk the water stops at the beginning but I forced myself to stick to my plan. It was hot out and the sun was shining. I couldn't wait for it to start to set. I felt great up until mile 8 when my stomach started feeling funny. That was the last time I really ate anything. Used the cold sponges every time they had them, sipped broth as soon as it was available and took 2 oranges slices every aid station. Going through the park was really boring to me and challenging mentally. On the second loop I just kept telling myself to get past that part. I was still feeling strong and at mile 18 I got my second wind and really perked up. There were very few people running and it was hard to see people suffering. But I stayed focus and just looked straight ahead. With about 2 miles ago, I could hear the announcers in the distance. I couldn't believe I was nearing the end. I wanted to walk to take it all in and make it last longer... but I didn't. What would you do differently?: Not be so cautious with my pace, eat more even when I was feeling sick, and not take those few extra walk breaks I snuck in. Post race
