Swim
Comments: Jumped in the pool quickly and only had a few minutes to get wet before the start of my wave. I felt comfortable in the water when I jumped in, but was overly aware of my "competition" in the neighboring waves. I am ultra competitive and was so scared of coming in last place in my heat. Stupid, I know. Once we started, I went out WAY too fast. I was kicking so hard (and I hardly ever kick when I swim!) that I lost my breath really quickly. I had a momentary panic attack on my third lap and had to stop by the end of the pool for a moment to compose myself. My hubby was watching from the side and I shot him a look. His look back said, "slow down." After that, I was able to get my rhythm back and finished fairly strong. I was second of the pool in my wave! As I jumped out of the pool, I realized I made my first rookie mistake...I forgot to start my watch on the swim! So, I'll never have accurate data for this part of the race. Ugh!!! What would you do differently?: Start slooooowly. Not pay so much attention to those around me. Try to warm up a little more before the race. Oh, and start my watch. :) Transition 1
Comments: It was SO cold running out of the pool and getting into clothing for the bike. Because the forecast was for mostly cloudy (it ended up being sunny), chilly and windy, I opted to wear some biking/running tights with a long sleeve shirt. Big mistake. It was so hard to get the tights on over my wet legs that I fell over. I was so flustered. I grabbed two more of my CLIF Shot Blocks to eat on the first loop of the bike. This was a horrible transition for me. Oh well, practice makes perfect! What would you do differently?: Not wear tights. Un-velcro my biking shoes so they're easier to get into. Practice, practice, practice. Bike
Comments: When we drove the bike course on Saturday, we were really concerned about the condition of the roads because they were rough. They actually weren't quite as bad as I expected, but it wasn't the best course. We had to do five loops, much of it riding into the wind and it was boring. I did a pretty good job of pushing it to 22-23mph on the one long straightaway and then I'd turn the corner into the wind and be back down to 14 mph! It was so frustrating. I didn't get passed by that many people, so I felt okay about my race. We had to count our laps and I completely freaked out at the end that I didn't do all five laps (the course was a bit short of 18K). What would you do differently?: Not much. I definitely need to spend more time in the saddle. Biking is my weakest discipline right now. I'll work on that in the coming weeks. Transition 2
Comments: This transition was a little smoother than the first. I can hardly remember it now, but I got my shoes off and my running shoes on pretty quickly. Another rookie error...I forgot to put on my race number belt! I didn't realize this until I finished the race. :) I grabbed my last two CLIF Shot Blocks and was on my way. What would you do differently?: Remember my race belt. Run
Comments: It wasn't until the run that I really started to get my heartrate under control and feel more comfortable. I had a little bit of knee pain after getting off the bike (my seat needs to be raised a little), so that hindered me out of the start. My first mile was about 9:11, so I was pretty consistent throughout. I never stopped to walk. Just grabbed a sip of water at one aid station. I had enough to drink on the bike that I felt sufficiently hydrated. At about mile 2.75, I saw my hubby on his way out (he was in a wave later than mine) and that was a good pick-me-up. When I saw the three-mile marker I sprinted the rest of the way in and finished really strong. It was a decent effort. What would you do differently?: Push myself a little harder. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and grabbed some water. Went to the finish line to wait for the hubby to finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Rookie mistakes - Event comments: This was a great "starter" race. I would definitely do it again next year as an early-season warm-up! Got up around 5:15am and got dressed. Finished getting the bikes ready, picked up our buddy across the hall who was jockstrapping for us and got on the road by 6am. I was SO excited and nervous at the same time. It was a beautiful morning, but really chilly and windy. I was unsure about my choice of race clothes (which will come into play later). We got to the race site around 6:30am and got our transition area set up. It was a pretty small race so we didn't have any trouble finding a good place to rack our bikes. I ate two of my six CLIF Shot Blocks to give myself a boost of energy. Got marked and headed in to the pool to check in. We checked in at the pool (to choose lane assignments) and watched the earlier waves going off. Before I knew it, it was my turn to count for the wave ahead of me and like that I was in the water!!!
Nothing really. We didn't have much extra time. In the future, I definitely need to get some sort of warm-up in. It was hard to go from nothing to race pace that quickly.
