Pre-race routine:

We were staying at the in-law's house in the territory (just off the run course, actually). Drove over Friday morning, had lunch, then went to the lake to sign in and drop off my bike. Got in my wetsuit and swam in open water for the first time! It was great - I was taking it easy and really enjoying the water. Went back to the in-law's, got cleaned up and headed to Spikes for the pasta dinner buffet. It was excellent. Glad I didn't over-eat the day before like I did before Indy. Saturday I got up around 5:00-5:15 and started getting ready. Had my usual race breakfast of a powerbar, wheaties fuel and gatorade. Then I headed off for the Inn to drop off my run stuff. Parked in the remote lot and took what seemed like he first shuttle to the lake. Everything seemed to be going very smoothly.
Event warmup:

Got to the lake and set up T1. I think on Friday I went back to my rack spot a million times trying to decide what to leave there vs. what to bring in the morning - nerves! Got my tires filled up and took the bike out for a little warm-up. Made sure my gears were set right for the big hill out of T1. Wish I would have got in the lake again, but hung out with my new Ytri friends instead.
Swim
  • 11m
  • 660 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thought it was a terrible swim. Looking back though I guess it wasn't so bad. My breathing was terrible. I went out way too hard, as per usual, and could not catch my breath. I felt like I spent half the swim on my back kicking. But at least I was moving. The final result was unbelievable to me to have "swam" that "fast".
What would you do differently?:

Work on slowing down or practice swimming faster and controlling my breath. I don't think the open water was really an issue - like I said I really enjoyed it on Friday swimming easy. I think I just need more race experience and more practice in general.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

Decent T1 for me. I wasn't really expecting to be super fast at my first event of this distance. I was happy with using the flip flops I brought to avoid the gravel transition area. Out of the water and ran down the sidewalk parallel to the beach. I left my sandals right before the right turn down into T1. I grabbed some water along the way and then stopped in the grass to take off my suit - great decision.
What would you do differently?:

Just get more experience. Also I don't think I will usually have to stuff everything into a bag due to the two transitions - most of my other races only have 1 transition area.
Bike
  • 52m 50s
  • 16.8 miles
  • 19.08 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought the bike went really well. I was very happy with my performance, especially on the hills. I'm really glad I biked the course back at Easter - I think it really helped me anticipate what was coming, use the right gears, and push myself more. Overall I was very happy to break the 1 hour mark. Super glad to see my family waiting for and cheering me on near the finish!
What would you do differently?:

Just more and more TITS and more hill work to get better. And of course, more experience.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Had a long run in to T2 and a shorter run out. Pretty happy with this time - again not really expecting to be super fast.
What would you do differently?:

More practice (notice the theme?). Run the other way down my row instead of out and around my row then down.
Run
  • 31m 44s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good run in the heat, considering just the past week was really the only time I've had to train in the heat. It got really hot around mile 2 and I wish there were some more aid stations. But pretty happy with how I kept myself going.
What would you do differently?:

Not much more I could have done, I don't think. Train more in the heat, which was unseasonable for this time of year. I know I sweat a lot - I'm thinking of carrying a little of my own water/gatorade when it's hot in the future, depending on the course.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line, grabbed some water, gatorade and a banana. Found a spot in the shade and had a seat. My family found me and congratulated me - so glad they came to watch! Later found some Ytri'ers and watched some more finish the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and overally lack of experience.

Event comments:

I had a great race! It was a lot of fun and I can't wait for my next one! Thanks to everyone on the Galena thread for answering all my questions and giving even more advice.
