Swim
Comments: Wore a wet suit, even though the swim is short. Really rough start. Someone actually grabbed my leg and started pulling me backwards at one point. A quick kick solved that problem. The swim is so short that it really is a sprint. Heart rate got really high. I was surprised to see that I was slower than last year (~20 seconds), but I guess I was thrashing a bit in the scrum. In hindsight, I probably should have stayed out of the crazyness, finished 20-30 seconds slower, and not burned myself out. Sighting was good. I was drafting for as very short time, but the person I was drafting was off course so I straightened out. I was pretty close to the front getting out of the water. What would you do differently?: Not much. Felt like roller derby in the water. Transition 1
Comments: Best transition I've ever had. Suit came off very quickly. The key is putting the wet suit over the timing chip and using a lot of body glide. I was really amazed at how fast it came off. Grabbed the glasses and helmet and took off. Really good flying mount and got my feet onto the pedals really well. I had to pedal uphill for a bit before getting into the shoes, but that went pretty smoothly as well. What would you do differently?: Just move more quickly. My heart rate was so high after the swim that I was trying to catch my breath and it slowed me down. I was 2nd in my AG and 7th overall. Bike
Comments: Just didn't feel in top form. I think the swim really hurt me overall and it slowed me down. Minor hill was crazy. People were actually falling over trying to get up the hill. GEar shifts were good. Only about 8 people passed me. What would you do differently?: Ride harder in the off season. I was a bit slower than last year. Transition 2
Comments: Another good transition. Got shoes on quickly, grabbed hat and race belt and got moving. What would you do differently?: Move more quickly. I was feeling really tired. 17th in AG and 104th overall. I was just tired. Bad pacing. Run
Comments: I felt bad from the start of the run. My pacing was really bad. I just fought it the whole time. Nice to see drink stations on the course. Didn't have them in the past. What would you do differently?: Better pacing before the run would have helped the run. I've been doing a lot of long slow running, but I needed more speed. Post race
Warm down: Went for a swim , drank gatorade and ate a banana, Ate an egg sandwich when I got home. What limited your ability to perform faster: Pacing! The swim got me red lined, and that hurt me for the rest of the race. Event comments: Good race, but the new run course was strange figure 8-like course. Adjusting for the new run course distance, I was actually slower than last year, but I had a good time and it's always great to do with my sons. Last updated: 2012-03-20 12:00 AM

Got up at 5:15 ate some toast and almonds. Stomach felt a bit out of sorts for some reason. Left at 6am, arrived at 6:25. Transition was moved and I was able to park in the Crystal Lake Beach parking lot. Checked in and waited. Probably got there too early.
Very short bike (to get gear set for transition) and run. Just a few strokes before the start.
