Swim
Comments: Was feeling good and was hoping to actually break 6:00 in the pool. As it was, I hit 6:07 out of the water. Additional 0:20 for the run out of the pool and down to transition. Still 0:17 faster than last year. I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Do more speed work. Transition 1
Comments: Sure didn't feel that short. With the cold wind, I put on arm warmers that were rolled up on my horns quickly but it felt forever. So as it is, I'll take it. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Race when it is warmer so I won't have to worry about putting on extra gear. :) Bike
Comments: Up to speed quickly and I was looking forward to seeing how I would do with a higher cadence, which I've been experimenting with. It worked. Last year, my mph was ~19.8. So on the same course, with a bit more wind, I did better. By 3-4 minutes. Again, I'll take it. But the proof that is in the pudding is still to come, in the run. What would you do differently?: Push it a bit harder in the wind. Transition 2
Comments: Another time where it felt like it took a long time. Putting socks on because I know that I'll be needing them for the HIM in July. But it wasn't nearly as long as I thought. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: So as my run being my weak point, I was really looking to see how it would stack up to years past. My volume is WAY above years past and I'm lighter than I've been at this point too. Finally, I did a tempo run on Thursday night and was flying at the end of it. So I was hoping that same tempo would come back with this race. This is also my first brick of the year. And I flew. Just flew. I've never run this 5k this fast and I've only run faster than this in 2 stand alone 5k's and that was a long time ago. But never off a bike. Ever. I hit the woods, did a quick check on the watch and it was sub 7:00. Freaked me out just a bit cause I've NEVER gone that fast and didn't want to go out too fast. Then I got a bit of a scare. About 1/3 mile in, I rolled my ankle on a rock. 5-6 strides later and it was fine. So I pushed on. First mile mark and I was at 7:53. I have a bad habit of slowing down in the second mile and didn't want that to happen. Kept concentration and the next beep from the run and I hit 7:50. I was now in the position to actually negative split the crap out of this race and boy did I. 7:33 in the last mile, not counting the last .1 mile. That was at 7:00 flat pace! I couldn't believe it. AND I wasn't sore or that winded. I'm now thinking I might have been able to actually go even a bit faster. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit. Found out after I got home that I missed the podium by 34 seconds. :) Closest I've ever been. What limited your ability to perform faster: The wind. :) Event comments: Small race that was the first one I ever did. I've been back every year ever since. And I will always go back. Great start to the year. Last updated: 2012-03-26 12:00 AM

Drove down, set up T1 and just relaxed.
Went for a short 1 mile run at tempo to see if I could still do the same tempo I finished up my long run from Thursday night. I did. This was going to shape up to be a good day.
