Overall Rank = 168/332

Age Group Rank = 35/68
Pre-race routine:

Up and grabbed my gear that I had setup from the night before, bike was checked in so just had to walk down to the race site. Family was still asleep so just funnelled in with the rest, had a banana and protien bar with water to wash it down. I had been fighting a cold the previous week that was taking forever to clear, thought I was 95% over it, looks like I was wrong.
Event warmup:

Walking to the transition area and then walking to the starting line.. no pre-event swim warm up..(does putting on the wetsuit count?)
Swim
  • 42m 31s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got started in the swim, thought I had a good pace going and was trying to get settled in. Had a hard time getting my breathing right and heart rate was high..Had to take a couple of breaks and slow thins down a bit to get my rythym, once I made the turn iw as able to get more into my groove but time had been lost on the initial portion.. Chest felt tight (not due to the suit, but due to my cold) so I believe that contributed. Swim had gotten better as compared to previous although it doesn't quite show. Calf was cramping coming out of the water so that didn't help matters.. needless to say.. it could've gone better.
What would you do differently?:

not get sick the week before the race (had been doing AWESEOME prior to the event.. damn germs).
Transition 1
  • 05m 22s
Comments:

came out of the water a bit dizzy, took a second to get my bearings but was able to get the suit down to my waist and cap / goggles off pretty quickly.. long run up to transition, just jogged it knowing we'd be hitting hills right off the bat. also, had shoes on the bike to start, LONG run on the cement and didn't want to slip/slide.. first time doing thsi (I know, nothing new on race day) but it ended up working out pretty well.. might have to continue..
What would you do differently?:

maybe run a bit faster? practice taking the suit off quicker..
Bike
  • 3h 06m 50s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Was not prepared for this hilly of a course, definitely need to get out on the trace a little more for next year (did I just say that?). was conservative on the downhills (on the horns vs. aero but tucked) and was glad I was in a couple of sections.. was very suprised on how much I had to drop into the little ring to spin up the hills. I"m not a masher so i kept the cadence up and it worked for me, passed quite a few people on the climbs (only to be passed on downhills sometimes..). more hill work and i'll be better prepared next year..
What would you do differently?:

hillwork hillwork hillwork.. plain and simple (oh and not be sick, if I would've rode as fast as my nose was running i would've set a new course record)..
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

due to an unfortunate mishap last year, i don't try to jump off of a moving bike, but I do stop barefooted and run in, works pretty well for me.. toes were numb coming off of the bike so that was a weird feeling.. but got in/out pretty quick..
What would you do differently?:

not sure, moved pretty efficiently. I didn't put my number/hat on running like usual so would do that, but in a 1/2 i'm not looking for every second, but good idea to keep it as a habbit.
Run
  • 2h 14m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

definitely felt the legs coming off of the bike, first few miles I felt pretty good to be honest..I wanted to be around 2 hours on the 1/2 and knew to keep a 9 min pace, was able to do that for the first few miles but the pace started falling off. I had no gas left so did my best to fuel with what I had and what was at the stations.. Got to see my wife/kids two times out on the course which helped but I had no "go" left, which earlier in the race i didn't seem to have it either.. I ended up just pushing the best I could through the course, the mid section was tough but muddled through it.. was able to meet up with my wife/kids again at the finish line and ran through the chute which was really cool. Kids loved it and I was very happy to share that with them! Tough run.
What would you do differently?:

more temperature training, not run the CMM 1/2 the week before and stay healthy.. just didn't have the "go" today..
Post race
Warm down:

hung out with the family, drank water/gatorade to hydrate (muscle milk too). Sat in the Normatec boots (those are awesome) and walked around..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running the CMM 1/2 the week before I'm sure didn't help nor did the 40 mile bike combined with that. Our weekend was non-stop and never had time to recoup.. which in turn led to me getting sick which I still hadn't kicked (and has now come back with a vengence in my chest) and contributed to my performance. Not making excuses, but I just didn't have the "go" feeling like I normally do in these races, body just felt "tired".. Need to completely recover before training some more for some shorter distances.. Happy Tri season is on, just wish I could've started off better..

Event comments:

Rev3 puts on a great event, i'm thinking i'll do this one again next year.. great race!
