Swim
Comments: Seeded myself with the 6:00 group. Good start - exactly pace I wanted to be at and breathing was good, unfortunately gassed a bit around 200m, backed off, then turned it back up for the final 100. No one passed me, I tried to pass on the 2nd to last lap, couldn't overtake, and passed on the final 50m. Pretty sure I came out of the water 6-6:15...but I walked out of the pool area as instructed, and then jogged to transition pretty slow. Transition 1
Comments: I did a Du earlier this year and FROZE on the bike, so I threw on a shirt to avoid that this time. That did not go well. Otherwise I did everything right, I was just cold, slow, and a novice. This will come in time...and practice. Got to bike, shirt on, glasses on, helmet on, unracked bike - had to finagle my bike out which meant shoes moved and I was dragging them as I ran. Struggled a little getting going on top of my shoes so I stopped, slid my feet in, and tightened the straps as I took off. What would you do differently?: HTFU - No shirt. Bike
Comments: Only recently got on my Speed Concept so I'm still tinkering with it a bit - that held me back a lot. Otherwise...I just need to push. I entered the course and soon saw the lead group after their turn around. They eventually caught me and I just tried to keep them in sight. Transition 2
Comments: I was cold and fumbling...and a novice. Did everything right, just slow - with the exception of dismount: I ended up pulling my shoes off the bike and carrying them since I was just dragging them. Got to the rack, ripped off shirt, cold fingers struggled putting socks on (I can't run without socks), grabbed my visor and off I went. Run
Comments: The run course starting on grass was horrible for me. Running is where I make up time and paying attention to what I'm stepping on as opposed to my pace really threw me off overall. I ran my first mile closer to 7mph and 2nd closer to 6mph. Post race
Warm down: Light stretching, continuous movement...didn't need much. Got nutrition situated and went about my business. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience. I need more pool time (logging distance, not technique), more practice with transitions, and bike training. If you look at my splits...it is probably exactly what you would expect from a novice triathlete coming from primarily a running back ground. I'm very motivated now - had my transitions been better, had a pushed more on the bike, and had I mentally HTFU'd on the run I would have dropped minutes off my time. Lessons learned. Event comments: For a smaller venue...they did a great job. I'll be back every year. Because it is so short, it's 100% on the participant to make it what they will. You can make it a <40m sprint, a warm up for the season, or just so you can say "I'm a triathlete". Last updated: 2012-04-23 12:00 AM

Checked in the day before and swam in the pool - I don't have steady access to a pool, especially one set up long course so I have to take advantage of opportunities (plus - I wanted to be competitive and go all out, but was looking at this event more as training for future events). That being said...3000m was probably a bit much.
Since I checked in the day before I slept in until 6, loaded the car, had a protein bar (supreme) and banana and got to the race around 7. I had a bunch of stuff with me so I took that in first and put it in lockers, then went back to the car to grab my bike and set up transition. Got marked, chipped, etc. and proceeded to warm up.
Jogged a mile to warm up, no bike (definitely should have, but I was getting a little crunched for time), and swam a couple hundred meters, including a 50m sprint. Continued stretching through announcements.
