Swim
Comments: Made my way up the to front, didn't want to weed through traffic. I figured I'd try and go out fast to clear the slower traffic. Horn sounded and off we went, I made my way towards the bouy line, got into a good rhythm and just tried to hold my stroke. I kept my head down a little long once, ended up hitting the bouy line beneath me. On the way back, with about 150 meters to go, I ran into the wall of pink caps, the ladies 30-39 wave that went just before us. I had to do a lot more shifting thwn I wanted to. I ended up turning way too wide of the swim exit which cost me 10 more seconds or so. But I was very pleased to see my swim time. What would you do differently?: Look up more, that's pretty much it. Transition 1
Comments: Not sure why it took nearly two minutes here. I guess removing the wetsuit bottoms took longer than I though. I've never been that fast, so not sure specifically what drug me down here. What would you do differently?: Practice Bike
Comments: Clipped in O.K. you have to merge into traffic coming out of T1, there were already hundreds of bikes on the course. Got up to speed quickly and tried to get my cycling legs on before the dam hill. I think I have yet to stay in the saddle going up that hill. It peaks at around 13% grade, thankfully it's not very long. That hill plus the climb right after it together make up a Cat. 1 climb. After that climb there's a nice descent buth 20 seconds after that is another climb. The climb/descent business repeats a few times before you finally get a flat portion where you can fully take advantage of an more aero position. This only lasts a few minutes though. The course was full of first times and beginners so I had to shout out "on your left" a few times. The key is to be load and say it ahead of time so they have time to react. On lap two my legs were screaming, especially doing up the dam hill. What would you do differently?: Not much. Given my current fitness I am pleased with this ride. Transition 2
Comments: A decent transition tome for me, still lots of room for improvement. What would you do differently?: Need to learn how to get feet out of shoes so I can just hop off and run to my transition spot. Run
Comments: Legs felt nice and tight after that bike ride. Took a water coming out of transition and poured most of it over my head. I picked it up a little doing down the hill following the dam hill climb. There's a small hill just after the last water station that caused a few people to walk. I wasn't having any of that although my pace going up that hill was close to walking. After that it's an up hill battle to the finish. Crossed the finish line, got my finishers medal, had my chip removed. DONE! What would you do differently?: My lack of training over the last 6 weeks really showed here in the run.I executed this short race to the best of my ability. There's no pacing here, it's 500 meters in the water, only 9 miles on the bike and 2.4 miles running. It is quite hilly but given the distance and duration, it's just go go go! Post race
Warm down: Got my post race favorite chocolate milk, ate a banana, talked to my co-workers, one who did the tri, another who did the duathlon. Talked to Linda Meyer (LindaKC) who had a great race, 8th overall female. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training due to injury. Event comments: Another great race, much to the efforts of Johnson County Parks and Recs crew! I think there were over 900 people on the course which is a record I believe. It as a little crowded on the bike course at times but most people showed respect to others and stayed to the right to allow fasters riders to go through. Last updated: 2012-04-23 12:00 AM

Here I am, six weeks after fracturing my collar bone, somewhat going against doctors orders but thinking this is just a sprint. I had been swimming once, twice a week with one arm in an effort not to loose too much swim fitness. Last night I swam about 300 yards with both arms to see if today was a good idea. This race is a non-USAT sanctioned event so I chose to wear my wetsuit bottoms. That will help my body position in the water to where I won't have the urge to pull so hard, especially with my right arm.
Woke up at 5:30, took quick wakeup shower, threw gear in car, mounted bike and headed over. Grabbed a banana on the way out.
I walked the bike from the parking area, at least 3/4 mile. That was pretty much my warmup. Swam from the boat launch area to the beach for the swim start. Talked to Mark, one of my co-workers who's wife was doing here first tri for another company. Since this raceTalked to a guy named Scott Bolen whom I'd never met but seen his name ahead of mine in race results numberous times.
