Pre-race routine:

3:00 AM comes awfully early and it is a long drive to Kemah. I got there in plenty of time to set up but I was tired before the race ever started.
Event warmup:

I jogged the path to the swim entrance to make sure i coudl find my bike in transition and reviewed all of the entrances and exits. It was then time to head over to the boat.
Swim
  • 41m 15s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

First - jumping off the boat was the coolest swim start ever! I did not get enough swim practice before this event so my breathing was difficult and I hurt my shoulders with a bad stroke again. I decided to take it easy because I had a difficult time sighting the buouys with the wave chop.
What would you do differently?:

I needed to quit worrying about sighting and just put my head down and swim. I got much faster during the second half of the swim and found myself passing a lot of swimmers that had passed me before
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

There was a lot of congestion getting out of T1, so my time was a little slower, but still not bad.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 20s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt like I was hammering it but my legs were still sore from the MS 150 the week before. My speed was good but I used up too much before the run.
What would you do differently?:

I would have backed off a little if I knew how difficult the run was going to be for me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Good transition
Run
  • 1h 10m 1s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs cramped up immediately and I had to walk a good bit. My legs were fatigued.
What would you do differently?:

I did a 117 mile bike and then a 150 mile bike the two weekends prior to this event. I need to avoid putting my legs under that much stress with no chance for recovery.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice bath! That was great!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I tried to do too much too soon... but it was still a fun race and I'm glad I did it. My 2012 season has been kicked off!

Event comments:

Excellent production!
