Swim
Comments: age group rank 11 of 93, overall 58 of 714, wet suit makes a huge difference, 2nd race in wetsuit, started near the front left. walked then a couple of dolphin dives, then started swimming. Once I got to the first buoy, had a little trouble sighting so I stopped twice and pulled goggles to forehead to see. Kept the swim easy and relaxed, counting strokes to 60 then starting over. Looking up every few strokes. Started catching wave in front of mine, so I knew it was going well What would you do differently?: Not too much, conditions were very favorable. Goggles fogged a little and there was some sun, so perhaps using shaded goggles that didn't fog Transition 1
Comments: after water exit, saw wife, handed her my goggles and cap and jogged up to transition. Since it was a longer race and cool, took the time to put on socks as well as a bike jersey. Glad I opted for the jersey as I was still cold on the bike. What would you do differently?: Not too much. Wetsuit came off fine. Bike
Comments: I don't think the rank is the bike split but the place I was in after the bike split. Starting off I felt OK. I tend to get sore in my hamstrings just above my knee. That didn't start until well into the bike. Since I had a good swim, I started getting passed early and often on the bike. Managed to keep it comfortable and stick to my race. Used the aerobars quite a bit. Stopped at an aid station to fill up my top bottle, second time, I managed to refill it without stopping - a new skill. What would you do differently?: In my Bento bag, I put 2 stingers and 3 powerbars. Prior to the race, I decided to unwrap the powerbars. Low and behold they stuck together so I had a triple decker powerbar. I ate the stinger first, then gradually ate the triple decker power bar. Managed to eat it all by the end. Plus I drank 2.5 bottles of gatorade. Didn't start feeling really tired until mile 45 or so. Wanted to get off at mile 50. The last 6 miles were cold. Managed to beat my time goal of 3 hours, so not much I would do different. Transition 2
Comments: saw my dad and wife as I was riding in. When i got into transition, wasn't sure how my legs were going to feel so I walked to the bike rack. Once I got there, I took my time taking off my jersey, putting on visor, etc. Due to all the gatorade, I had to use the portajohn just outside transition. This was a couple minutes added to my run time. What would you do differently?: Not much, took my time getting to the bike rack. Run
Comments: when I started, legs felt surprisingly good. Ran first few miles between 7 and 7:30 I think. Consciously slowed down knowing I had a long way to go. Started counting to 100 over and over in my head. Stopped at each water station to walk while drinking water. Had 3 gels, at 3, 6, and 10 miles or so. Tried to keep cadence up, energy and pace were fairly constant as my last split was 8:08 which was good. Once I got near the finish, found my daughter and we ran across the line together. What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot, maybe had a little extra left when the race was over. No cramping, etc. Felt good. This was my half marathon PR by 30 seconds. Post race
Warm down: walked around, got a few pictures with the family. Felt good. Went to the ART tent for a massage. During the massage, got a bad hamstring cramp. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike could maybe have been faster. Overall, felt good about my race. My time goal was a conservative 6 hours since the Triathlete Magazine article was called 6 hours or bust and this was my first half. Event comments: This was my favorite race of all time. The conditions were near perfect. My whole family was there. I had a good performance that was much better than I had hoped. The race was very well run and very family friendly. Great course, great swag, and lots of participants. Great experience, still feeling very good about everything. Last updated: 2012-05-10 12:00 AM

Saturday afternoon went to the meet the pros and bike check in. Went to dinner saturday night with family at family restaurant. Sunday morning, up before the alarm, not a great night sleep. Helped pack, had 3 pieces raisin bread and peanut butter, and cliff bar, and cup of coffee. Then went to transition. Started to get excited while in transition.
Had a couple of gatorades. Got in the water 2x, got wet, swam maybe 25 yards, then got out and got a couple of pictures with the family.
