Comments:

Disappointed by the swim. I nailed my sighting, never drifted, but just ended up really slow. First time at a distance like this, so maybe I held back, but bummed with the result. Did fine with the bumping. The chest cold put me behind here, kept trying to cough under water to clear it, never worked. Also, couldn't pee.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get the glide and relax,
Transition 1
  • 04m 21s
Comments:

This included the hill climb, which I basically walked up. Decided to shoe up at transition to get a solid strap down.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, was actually pretty decent
Bike
  • 3h 02m 58s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.36 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty happy with the bike for first HIM. Knee flared up at mile 4, but kept it under control by keeping cadence up and pressure down. Really hurt if stood up or tried to challenge at all. Stopped at first bottle hand up to use the porta. Nutrition was good, 3 bottles of Brew, a gel every 30 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on the bike, get stronger/faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Pretty good T2. Came in hot, shoes off, good jog in. took time to put socks on, used the porta potty again, went out the back with the bottle.
What would you do differently?:

Pee less.
Run
  • 2h 14m 26s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 05m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I didn't bonk. Went out too fast at 8:30 and 9:10, and 9:25 with the hope I'd make 6, but that just wasn't going to happen. Ended up settling into mid 10's. Forgot to take salt out with me. Pretzels and salt tabs at the aid stations saved by ass. Final mile in 10:08 so finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

bring tabs on road
Post race
Warm down:

sat for a few minutes, hugs all around with the fam, amazing turkey dinner. I think the stuffing and gravy thoughts kept me going the last hour.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First HIM, more training, will know what I'm getting into.

Event comments:

Amazing race. I volunteered on Saturday for the Sprint, and got a sense of the work that goes into it. Great race all around, amazing first 70.3.
