  • Comments: The swim course design was horrible, in my opinion. Why have us swim directly into the sun?! You can choose the course direction. If we had just gone counter clockwise, the sun never would have been a factor. I spent at least 1/3 of the race blinded by the sun and having no idea where the buoys were. On top of that, the decision to put us on the same swim course as the Olympic race was a bad decision. As I was swimming the 2nd loop, I had Olympic swimmers crossing directly in front of me at a 90 degree angle. I had to stop to avoid running into them. It was just a really bad design. The run course was confusing and could have used a little better direction from the volunteers, but I managed to navigate it without getting off course. The biggest issue was at about 7.5 miles. Some racers were coming in and needed to head for the finish. Other racers needed to pull a 180 and head back for another loop. But no volunteers were yelling directions or directing traffic. I eventually

  • Comments: This was my first HIM and I would say the number one thing this event has going for it is its volunteers. Every aid station was fully STOCKED and the people at each station were so psyched to see you and eager to help in any way. It was really great - the best supported event I've been to. Well done to the Pumpkiman organizers and volunteers! I went to Maine with DH who is my biggest supporter and the best sherpa anyone could ask for. With us was another couple (he raced, she sherpa'd), and 3 friends from my tri club and another friend who lives in NH that we don't get to see often enough. It was so great to see everyone on the course and be able to cheer everyone on so often. NOT TO MENTION my cousin and her husband drove over from VT for the day (nearly 3 hours each way) just to see me finish. She's my partner in crime for IMMT and having everyone there was awesome. It really was a great day and I had a blast! I could write about it all day but I'll end it here. :) DH says

  • Comments: This was my first half Ironman. My goal was to finish which I did. I had hoped for a better time but the hills on the bike course was more than what I trained for and I suffered in the run. But I finished and the volunteers were great an I have nothing but positive things to say for the organizers, Great day, great race.. Kudos to all the volunteers.

  • Comments: Considering I did not have the time to train the way I needed, I was happy with just finishing. I did finish better than I had anticipated and overall was very happy with my results. I can't wait to see what I can do with the proper training and losing 20lbs! It was great seeing all of the HS kids out volunteering, they were all very cheerful and encouraging, GREAT volunteers all around!

  • Comments: Love this race. The only complaints are the swim setup, but with the small lake and 2 loop swim there's not a lot to be done. Maybe shorter gaps between waves would help, but not sure as they second loop of the early waves would probably still overlap. Post race food is second to no other race. It's a full on home made buffet Thanksgiving dinner on real plates with real silverware, and homemade apple crisp and whoopie pies for dessert.

  • Comments: I cannot compare this race to any other half irons or really much else. With that said, it was a perfect race for my first half. It was smallish, well organized, the people were friendly, and it was a pretty easy course. Everything, from my performance, how it was run, and the overall atmosphere, exceeded my expectations.

  • Comments: This was my 3rd year at the Pumpkinman triathlon festival, but only my first attempt at the Half. What a great experience. The course was beautiful, and somehow the weather held out and turned into a beautiful fall morning. Hats off to the ton of volunteers in their bright pumpkin-orange shirts out on the bike and run courses, they did an amazing job keeping the traffic at bay, and keeping us on course. Big thanks to the folks in the neighborhood section at the far end of the run loop as well ... those ice-sponges were perfect. The post-race feast was great too. Fresh carved turkey, mashed potatoes, brownies, yum! Only downer this year would be it seemed that the exp area was much smaller (to nearly non-existant) this year.

  • Comments: This was a well run race. The people running the show could not have been nicer. The race started on time. There were plenty of people to cheer the racers on. The course was beautiful (I don't know about it being one of the most scenic in the US as stated in Triathlon mag). The race medal was a can opener. I would do it again. Finally - the day was so beautiful. Near perfect conditions.

  • Comments: I would give it a 5 if not for the ice. Honestly a 6 if not for the ice. They gave us two great shirts. One for the festival weekend and another for finishing. Two great bags. One a nike draw string bag that's nylong. A second that can double as a waist pack or shoulder sling bag made out of the nice back pack material and having the pumpkinman emblam on it. Race medals very cool. Post dinner the best ever. Turkey dinner with mashed pots, squash, green beans, stuffing and gravy. For dessert these awesome whoopie pies made of pumpkin bread and a cream filling that was pumpkin flavored. I far as the race I'm amazed I went for almost 6 hours at a heart rate that had to have been 160+ for a large part of it. I might have even average that or close to it not knowing what it was on the swim. Love to do the race again when peaking.

  • Comments: The atmosphere and activities were a major reason I chose this race in the first place and I wasn't disappointed. Goody bag was great, easily-spotted volunteers all over the place, pumpkin man sculptures lined the finish chute, Pumpkinhead Ale freebie at the end, good harvest dinner. I was pleased. I'd like to go back at some point and improve my time :)

  • Comments: The race organizers did everything under their power to make this a great event. I didn't like the road conditions much but I was also not in the best place mentally while riding. I would certainly recommend it to others. I need to remember that triathlon is just a fun diversion and I am doing this to challenge myself, stay fit and enjoy the company of people who feel the same way as I do. Back at work on Monday only one person even knew/remembered I had raced. It helps keep things in perspective. I will just keep tri-ing. First 70.3 is done!

  • Comments: This was a great race and its very well organized. The post race Turkey dinner was fantastic. I hate to be so negative in my RR, but I just didn't have it today. Nonetheless, I'm happy to have taken 2nd in my AG and there were some positives to take away from the race. Hopefully I'll feel a heck of a lot better at the Beach to Battleship Full next month! :)

  • Comments: The Pumpkinman team is AWESOME, for a first timer I could not have asked for a better course or support from volunteers, etc. It was amazing, IF I ever do another Half Iron it would probably at a different venue (just for a change) but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to be a part of this race and would do the Sprint in a heartbeat!
