Swim
Comments: Swam a lot faster than expected! Got a couple of good slugs of water and a few contacts with other swimmers. Got stuck behind a recovery swimmer and could not seem to get by him. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run in farther? Pretty shallow throughout the course. Started swimming before any one else in the wave. Transition 1
Comments: Was pretty winded coming out of the water so had to slow down to catch breath. No problems getting to T1 and getting bike gear on. Wet suit came off great. What would you do differently?: Run out of water to T1. Practice and get proficient at mounting bike with shoes in pedals. Still no ready to go w/o socks yet. Bike
Comments: Thought this would be my strength but simply ran out of gas. My comp got knocked out of whack in T1 so I had actually thought I was faster than the result showed. It was great to have the family cheering for me as I went by the house! What would you do differently?: Learn to mount with shoes on pedals. Set a consistent pace. More fitness, more training. Need to practice hills so I can get the gearing down. Transition 2
Comments: Took a few moments to lay down and stretch lower back. What would you do differently?: Get quicker and more efficient Run
Comments: Took a few moments to lay down and stretch lower back. Leg were really tight but I pushed on rather than giving in to the stiffness. Was really winded and had difficulty taking deep breaths. Had to walk a number of times because I felt I was hyperventilating. Still, I pushed on and got my best 5k run time (ace) ever! What would you do differently?: Need more training. More bricks, more CV, more running! Post race
Warm down: Watched and cheered on the few people that finished after me. Took shower and had lunch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Chest cold. I am slow. I am overweight. I did not train enough. Event comments: The Y had LOTS of volunteers to help. Well organized and everyone was very helpful. It was great to see the different social organizations (ie Girl Scouts) there to serve as volunteers. Bike route - All intersections were very well controlled by local law enforcement and fire personnel. Folks were posted at the one blind curve to alert divers and participants. Bike Course was well marked (even though I am very familiar with it). A big thanks to all at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA and all of the volunteers. I made sure to thank all I came across. Woke up at 0430 with a the start of a nasty chest cold. Contemplated (briefly) not going. Hot bath to warm up. Packed car and loaded bike and off to Y by 0530.
Set up transition, changed in to race gear. Stretched and hydrated. Talked to some friends.
