Pre-race routine:

Woke up early at 3:30 and drove from Savannah to Jekyll Island. Got there around 5:45 and didn't eat breakfast since I had a huge dinner the night before. Got checked in, setup transition quick trip to the bathroom and then I was ready
Event warmup:

No warmup walked 1000 yards down to swim start.
Swim
  • 24m 17s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow what a rough swim. No buoys around the whole course other then the last two, no kayak support and no lifeguard support because it was so rough. RD just said go and we swam, honestly I couldn't see anyone around me to draft with so I just kept going and then finally saw a buoy that we were supposed to hit and then went around it and headed to the shore after i passed the second buoy. It was a rough, rough swim and one of the athletes died in the spring tri that started shortly after us.

Time wise because of the waves and current that was pushing us in this was a very fast swim for me at least.
What would you do differently?:

Calmer waters would help but did the best I could.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Well this transition should have been 2-3 minutes because it took me 3 minutes to run from water to the transition that was counted against my swim time which is one of the gripes I had about organization of the race. Run to transition was long but overall very good transition for me. Didn't wear socks.
What would you do differently?:

RD needs to put the timing chips closer to swim exit and not have us run 2-3 minutes to get to transition.
Bike
  • 1h 27m
  • 28.5 miles
  • 19.66 mile/hr
Comments:

It took me first few miles to get all of the saltwater out of my system. Couldn't get moving first few miles because of that but heart rate settled after and i got some tail wind and was able to push it a little bit. Headwinds were little crazy on minute I was going 23mph and next 16mph at the same effort. Managed to keep a good pace overall and felt like I might have pushed it a bit too much. I paid for it later :)

Course was flat and in ideal conditions this would have been a very fast split for me but mixture of winds and drinking a sea of water made this for a longer then usual day on the bike.

What would you do differently?:

Come out of water more refreshed, keep my HR in check and get into race mode faster. I am still working on the mental part of my game.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Coming into transition the guy in front lost his shoe so i picked it off and handed it him. Then Brandon a guy I met during pre race came in at the same time (he had a flat unfortunately) and it tok me longer to get out of transition because of it i decided not to wear socks which haunted me after I got some crazy blisters on the run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing good overall tranistion i would wear socks for anything other than sprints :)
Run
  • 58m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I was doing good about a mile in and then the wheels started coming off, mile two was horrible I was looking for an aid station and didn't see one until we hit mile two. Go passed by few people and passed a few on my own but was really feeling it. Somehow got to the turnaround point ate my GU and washed it down with water. Saw Jillian_o running and she looked much stronger so tried to hold her off as much as I could but she passed me around mile 4 and off she went :)

I was feeling the blisters and my feet kept going numb not sure what was all that about but just kept pushing. After mile 4 I didn't see any other aid stations and that was the hottest part of the race going thru the paths next to the beach. NEED MORE AID stations
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I did the best I could I know I can run a lot faster than that but due to PF injury and taking 6 weeks off from running I was just happy I didn't stop once :)
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed and chugged a water and powerade. Got a massage and sat around waiting for results

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Run injury and run fitness is off need to spend a lot more time working on my bike and run in preparation for Augusta. Overall a good race and a PR for me but I felt like I could do a lot better. Next years goal is to be around 2:45 :)

Event comments:

I gave this race an average review because of:
Lack of swim support and lack of buoys. Lot of people didn't follow the swim course and didn't hit the buoys right which means they shorted their swims but you can't blame them when there is no buoys around to go around.

Long transition which counted against your swim time instead of your T1 time.

Need more aid stations on the run, need to have cold water and gatorade/powerade it was hot as hell.

Block of the run paths in the parking lots don't have spectators running into the runners.

When printing race results put persons Age on the results so we don't have to wait two hours to hear race results.
