Overall Rank = 98/263

Age Group Rank = 11/21
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15, had an almond meal pancake + maple syrup, yogurt, a banana, and a glass of almond milk.
Event warmup:

Jogged about a 1/2 mile roughly 20 minutes before start time.
Run
  • 21m 22s
  • 2.83 miles
  • 07m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

The run wasn't as bad as I expected, definitely enjoyed the scenery running through the wooded areas. My calves began to hurt towards the end of the run, and at that point I knew the second run would not be an enjoyable experience.
What would you do differently?:

Train a lot more for the run before hand and perhaps not use new shoes on race day.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

A lot faster than my usual bike transition times, could have shaved an extra 15 seconds off if I hadn't fumbled around trying to unclip my helmet from the handlebars.
What would you do differently?:

Placing my helmet on the ground (or maybe on top of my shoes) next to the bike might have saved me a bit of time.
Bike
  • 47m 36s
  • 28 kms
  • 35.29 km/hr
Comments:

Felt pretty good on the bike, dawdled for a bit to drink some water, so my start was fairly slow. Loved the course and it's rolling hills, would have been better if my gearing was more appropriate though, the first big hill had my legs screaming for a lower gear. Ended up slowing down quite a bit on 2 corners because I wasn't entirely sure where the race officials were pointing to.
What would you do differently?:

- 11-28 Cassette in the back rather than my 11-25.
- Incorporated more hills in training with the tt bike.
- Drank water before getting on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Pretty good transition.
Run
  • 22m 1s
  • 2.51 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Calves absolutely blew up on this leg of the run, that coupled with stomach cramps mid way in hobbled my performance.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out what's behind the cramps, I had the exact same thing happen to me on my first Duathlon (Minneapolis Duathlon 2011) and I attributed that to gulping down some gatorade before the run. I sticked to water this time, but that didn't seem to work. In hindsight I also should have also thrown off the long sleeve cycling jersey at the start of the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around transition for a bit, had a hot dog and rushed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Calf pain and stomach cramps on the second run pretty much did me in.

Event comments:

Great race, had a lot of fun, and definitely plan to be back next year. I felt the event was well organized and offered a pretty good challenge.

*P.S. It's always awesome when conditions turn out better than expected (...Falls Duathlon)
