Pre-race routine:

Cup of tea and a smoothie. Wrangle the dog and DW into the car to get to the race.
Event warmup:

Run around getting chiped/body marked and then a walk to the beach. Slammer going nuts the whole time that I'm not with him I can hear his barking the entire time.
Swim
  • 23m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. Popped a GU on the way to the start. Didn't have any trouble sighting and kept a strong pace. The race was a wave start with the males going first then relays/women. After I round the last bouy a pink swimcap races past me. I'm thinking DAMN that's a fast swimmer, find out later she was an 11 year old in the race hats off to her. The water was a bit chopy with the tide coming in and I was able to body surf one wave almost the entire way in, awesomeness.
What would you do differently?:

More and consistent TITP. But for this day I couldn't have asked for a better swim
Transition 1
  • 05m 33s
Comments:

The official times are a bit different but I hit the button on the Garmin to start my transition after exiting the water but the mat wasn't until you got the 1/4 mile to the transition site through loose sand with plenty of sharp sticks. I wanted to see my true swim time though. Overall went well wetsuit off without a problem and a quick squirt to get the sand off toss shoes and socks on grabed my jersey sunglasses and helmet and was off.
What would you do differently?:

Get a tri top so I don't have to put it on in transition but other than that nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 58s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 20.98 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal for this race was under 3 hours and at least improve on last years time. My pace last year was just under 20 mph so I wanted over 20 this year. Goal accomplished. Had 2 GU's during the bike which was definitely about right, was able to get my gloves on while riding which I have struggled with in the past. Good course it had some small, island height, hills very scenic and a good time. I did ok on the passing/getting passed ratio but I was in the front of the group on the swim so I excpected a few to pass me here. What I didn't expect was a group of about ten riders, several of whom I had passed earlier, in the second half of the course to drtaft like it was going out of style and pass me. A course ref was right there to but because we don't have bike numbers and most of the body markings had rubbed off no one got a penalty.

Oh well I'm racing me and not a contender for a podium so suck it up buttercup and push through.
What would you do differently?:

More TITS but again I am happy with my performance this day and it was the best I could do with what I brought to the start line.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

All good here run through drop the bike grab the Garmin to put it back on my waist grab my race belt and go.

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 10m 55s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Umm... Yeah. I knew this run was going to suck and amazingly enough I was right! Lack of consistent training put me at a disadvantage. I went in hoping for ten minute miles... Not so much I was hitting 12's most of the way but it was what I could keep up. Almost puked during mile 3 and went to a more consistent 2 min walk 5 min run and was able to keep that going to the end. I will say fellow competitors were great here everyone was pushing each other to keep going and offering encouragement.

Make the final turn into the finish and Slammer starts losing his furry little mind again barking and howling at me. I hear people laughing as they realize I'm his owner glad he had a good time ;-)
What would you do differently?:

More TITS, it's like a theme on my RR's. Not as happy with my having to walk so much but I was in pain and with my HRM not working I couldn't look and say ok I'm going too hard lets walk it back or c'mon HTFU. Obviously I need to consistently train especially with my HIM coming up in January.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit had a coke met up with DW and we headed out I had a turkey to fry after all.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistent training. I really want to know how I would do if I did 3/4 of a training plan instead of barely half of one. Maybe someday ...

Event comments:

Second year and I will be back again, great time of year for it and it is run well enough. I would say that hey need bike numbers to discourage drafting but that's a fairly common gripe for races that I've seen.
