Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, ate a gel and had some coffee, my stomach did not feel great so I skipped the bannana and pb bagel. Drove up to the race and it was FREEZING out, put my wetsuit on early to try and stay warm.
Event warmup:

Got in the water to see how bad the current was, swam out to the first breaker and back
Swim
  • 12m 11s
  • 750 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim, missed being 1st in my age group by 6 seconds. I had no problems sighting, never had a problem with the surf, I've learned to like the rough water, the weekly workouts at the beach are paying off!
What would you do differently?:

Probably still could have pushed it a little harder on the swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Good transition, sat down and took wesuit off and ran into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 23m 44s
  • 8 miles
  • 20.22 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt like I had a good bike, I knew I had to keep my speed up over 22 to beat my last years time. It was very windy and raining and it was hard to see, especially with the spay coming off the rear tires of the other riders. I really tried to get as aero as possible and I think it paid off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had cages on so I had my running shoes on the whole time. This is the first time I had my race number pinned to my tri-shorts, I had it tucked in for the swim. I think it is faster than the race belt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 24m 20s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

It's a strange run, I had fun talking with a friend of mine, we changed leads a few times but overall I like running on the beach. Again I think the weekly workouts at the beach paid off, we run in soft sand so the hardpack was easy.
What would you do differently?:

Should have pushed it harder on the run, no mile markers to guage my pace but I should have known that if I was talking and laughing I wasn't running hard enough.
Post race
Warm down:

There was no such thing as a warm down, it was still raining and freezing! I put everything I owned on and tried to stay out of the rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The run was not as good as it should have been, the rest of the race was great.

Event comments:

This was the first race that I have ever placed in, I was very surprised! I might be on to something because I had no expectations going in other than trying not to throw up. Once the race started I felt fine, it was the most fun I have ever had racing, there was a couple of my friends that I have never beat and I could see that I was out in front of them, that helped me keep the pace up.
