Swim
Comments: I trained for the swim the last 4 weeks. I did 600 yards freestyle in the pool (non-stop) just a few days ago and today I could not keep freestyle up for 405m. The wave where so high that they came over my head and I swallowed water when I tried to breath. I used breaststroke a lot as I could barely see goggle where fogged up after 1/8 of the swim, luckily my breast stroke is faster than some others people freestyle. Also I kept bumping into people. What would you do differently?: Start further in front and try to focus more on my own rhythm and style. Train more swimming. Get better goggles Transition 1
Comments: Ditched the bike gloves, but used my socks. Smooth transition, need to put on shoes in place as I only have bike shoes. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: I trained on the dam a few times, even with wind. I aimed for a 18+mph speed and was delighted with my speed that I could push. I even passed a few people. I do love the bike leg. I gained a lot in the corners, guess my long year of mountain biking and road-motorcycles paid off. Almost crashed when I went in a corner fast, tipped brake, front wheel slipped and I held my bake and finished the last mile strong. Not crashing is due to the same situation mastered on road motorcycles before a few times (and crashed on motorcycle quite a few times). What would you do differently?: Get aero bars (already bought used once on BT). Look for bike-tri shoes as I might gain some time in transition. Aero helmet is ordered as well. Train more for speed than just endurance. Transition 2
Comments: Opened shoes on bike, but stuck to foot and came off bike. Then shoe dropped and I had to carry it in. I was using my normal running shoes, not even speed laces. Lacing shoes in stress was way to time consuming. Need to look into speed laces for next tri. What would you do differently?: Look for tri-bike shoes. Get speed laces for running shoes Run
Comments: I aimed for a 9 to 10 minute mile and started with 8:30ish, ended with 9:02 and I am very happy with it. After 0.75 miles I had the biggest grin on my face for the remainder of the race as I knew I was going to finish strong and finally be a triathlete! My wives cheering at the end pushed the rest out of me, her support there was awesome! What would you do differently?: Nothing, around 9min/mile for me is fantastic! Post race
Warm down: Eat candy bar, drink cup of water and my wife and I chat with parents that waited for their daughter that did her first tri. What limited your ability to perform faster: The wind was nasty and caused the lake to be a bit rougher than I liked. Event comments: Ironhead is known for great races without fancy stuff afterwards. I got what expected! Last updated: 2012-05-28 12:00 AM

Started routine with packing my bag the night before. This included a frantic search for my 310XT which I thought I had lost.
Watched a bunch of transition how-to videos as I had not trained it and this was my first tri.
Decided therefore to take our Yoga mat instead of a floor towel.
On race day I got up at 4am to have 2 slices of bread and then head to the course to the be there for the 5:30am transition opening.
Until 6:45 I hang out with my wife and of course visited the restroom as I do before every race
Tested the water temperature, as it was cold and windy.
