Swim
Comments: The swim was a dirty, in neighborhood lake/pong swim. Lot of sea grass on the surface so it made for some funny looking bikers later on. Of course the washing machine start with everyone on top of each other. Could not catch my breath of find any rhythm for approx. the first 200-250 meters. Once I hit the turn buoy everyone near me spread out and I was able to settle in. I was hoping for a quicker time but considering I swam much of the first couple 100 meters with my face out of the water I will take. What would you do differently?: I need to work on swimming stronger in groups. I easily get swam over and lose all momentum. I recovered well once things thinned out and the wife said I had a great rhythm coming to shore. Transition 1
Comments: Well unknown at the time my timing chip was a dud so all my timing it from my Timex (I should request a refund). There was a lot of grass (I think they have freshly mowed the field where transition was). Got to my rack easily and fairly quickly and spent time "de-grassing" my feet to put on the bike shoes. I left them half strapped in and grabbed my bike as I felt like I spent too much time trying to get all that grass off my bare feet. Running start and finished strapping in shoes once on the bike course. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Well... (again no official timing so everything based off my data). Which is all too bad too because based on the time I had this was an absolute PR for me. I have traditionally not had over a 20 mph avg for any race distance. Over 23 mph --- daaaaaaamn GINA. I do have to say though that on top of my timing chip not working my bike computer also choose not to work so I had no idea how fast I was going, how far I had gone or what my cadence was. I was riding blind. I found a guy on the course that looked to be a strong rider (thankfully my perception was spot on) as I asked him if he has pace/distance which he confirmed. I settled in behind him (just outside drafting distance) and rode in his wake the entire ride. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: Uhhhh.... no official time and I dropped the ball on my data as I didn't hit the lap button until exiting T2 (which would actually knock off a minute or two off my bike time. But again... worthless timing companies. Run
Comments: PUSHED this hard. I knew it was only three miles and I had done two weeks of bricks before tapering slightly (recovery week) in my overall training plan. I knew what kind of effort I could maintain for that distance and I gave it 110%. I left nothing on that run course. Experience is beginning to pay dividends as I have a better understand of fluids, calories, timing with perceived effort and how it effects my results. Too many turns on the course though. Made passing slower age groupers in earlier waves ahead of me hard to pass. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Stretched and hung out with the wife and waited for friends to finish. Went and met up with new teammates and chatted for a few. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swim. I PR'ed the Bike and Run. Event comments: C'mon timing company. Wasted PR 'sas there is no record! Last updated: 2012-06-04 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:15 and had a bowl of oatmeal and two cups of "jet fuel" (strong black coffee). Didn't sleep well the night before. Woke at 2:30 am to use the b-room and already had some pre-race jitters. I had put in some heavy training preparing for Bridgland in August and was using this race as a barometer.
Woke up the wife and we headed down to Sugarland with the car packed and ready. Listened to some Skrillex on the drive down tot he race. Might have been a bit early for that!
Once I got everything settled and set-up in transition I put on the Pearl Izumi ISOs and went for a slow trot. Did some various warm-up drills for the legs as I knew this was going to be a fast race and wanted to be plenty warm for it since this being a Sprint distance.
