Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:00. Got the bike rack and bike back on the car, woke up my two little girls (5 and 2) and my wife and went from the lodge to the race site. Had a bagel with PB and a banana. This is my normal prerace meal, and had never had any issues until now.
Event warmup:

Got on the bike and did a short ride to make sure everything was in working order. Transition closed at 7:30 and my wave wasn't until 8:22 so I just walked around and headed to the beach to watch the sprint race go off.
Swim
  • 32m 7s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

The beginning of a rough day. I went out and thought I was heading to the right marker since I was swimming with several others and realized we were headed to the second yellow marker. I had to turn around and head back to the first marker. Overall the rest of the swim was fine. Got into a rhythm and new my time was going to be slow due to the extra yardage.
What would you do differently?:

Head to the first marker!
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Felt a bit tired and started to feel the stomach revolting.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 34s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Usually my best leg of the triathlon. My first lap was fast (avg
+20) but my second was slower for sure. My stomach at this point was hating me and I spent quite a bit of the second loop out of aero.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do more long distance bikes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Overall a good transition. I run with socks due to some blisters from a marathon two weeks ago, so that added some time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 53m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

This was more grueling due to my stomach than due to running. Had to stop at the second water stop and use the facilities. After that my run felt great. I think my last three miles were right around 8:00 which is good for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Had to get my daughter back to Akron by 3:00 for a dance recital, so grabbed a few cookies, headed to transition packed up, back to the lodge for a quick shower then a +3 hour drive. (We just made it with about 5 minutes to spare!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

GI issues

Event comments:

I like this race, but was a bit let down by my performance. Last year I was really competitive in the sprint distance, but I learned a lot and look forward to my next olympic and am already thinking about the next race!
