Swim
Comments: The swim had a view of Space Mountain, which I thought was totally cool. I felt really good on the swim, like I was moving efficiently without overdoing it. I drifted too far off course a couple of times into the buoys, but recovered fairly quickly. I forgot to start my stopwatch, though. I had hoped to finish the swim in 45-50 minutes, so I exceeded my goal. What would you do differently?: Press the start button on my watch! Transition 1
Comments: Took it slow in T1 since this was my first time doing a HIM, plus the area was a little crowded. Drank some Sustained Energy and had some gel, which also took some time. What would you do differently?: Speed and efficiency Bike
Comments: Due to the hills, I had expected my average pace to be about 16.5, so I was pleased with the slightly faster speed. In a tough turnaround, I had to veer off the road to avoid crashing into some bikes who had slowed way down. Overall, though, I had expected the bike portion to take me about 3.5 hours, and I finished faster. The best part of the bike was recognizing TyDarby as he passed by me! What would you do differently?: Not lose my gel flask during the first two miles of the bike, and not cause Ty to lose precious seconds by trying to have a conversation with him :) Transition 2
Comments: Could have been faster, but decided to stop at the portolet before the run What would you do differently?: Speed things up - again, I was taking my time in transition. Run
Comments: Could it have been any hotter?? I was feeling great coming off the bike, but the run just wiped me out. I ended up running intervals: 5 minute "run" (which was more of a jog), 1 minute walk. Drank a lot of water with some Endurolytes, as well as my planned servings of Sustained Energy. I was about 20 minutes slower than I wanted on the run, but I wasn't going to push it in the heat. What would you do differently?: Heat acclimation, which should be easier with summer coming on full blast. Post race
Warm down: Walked around for a while while drinking water, then rode my bike about a mile back to my cabin (nice easy spin), ate some yogurt, drank water, stretched, then took a lukewarm shower (no time for an ice bath due to checkout). What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat! It was physically and emotionally draining. Event comments: Good race for my first HIM. Last updated: 2006-05-23 12:00 AM

Up at 5:00 am, ate some plain yogurt with Tropical Hammergel. Since we stayed in a cabin at Fort Wilderness, my husband was able to drive me to the transition area and drop me off, then drive back to the cabin and catch a bus (no parking near the race start). Set up transition, got body marked by someone on my bike rack who brought her own Sharpie - I had never thought of that, but it saved some anxiety since I didn't have to wait in line.
Minimal - mostly swatting bugs before the swim start. Some walking around, a little bit of swimming a few minutes before my wave started.
