Swim
Comments: My swim was terrible. It was my first salt water swim and my first to ever do in such a large wave (150+ people). I got behind about 3 guys and I didn't want to spend all the extra energy to pass them, but I was a faster swimmer than they were and wound up stuck. Plus, I got a little panicky with bumping into people and having them hit my legs. I was MISERABLE through the swim. What would you do differently?: Practice in salt water. It was a learning experience for both swimming in salt water and in a large group. Transition 1
Comments: I spent a few seconds rinsing my mouth out before getting on bike. Plus, it helped to clear my head after that swim. I still had emotional and physical effects of the swim going into the bike. What would you do differently?: Relax Bike
Comments: I started off slower than I meant to. I was still trying to get over the swim. My bike was decent. I'm OK with how I did though I hoped to average a higher speed. I was expecting a wind from the South or Southwest which is historically the normal wind direction in Galveston this time of year. However, the wind was out of the SE. SO, going out we had a tail wind and coming back a head wind. The wind was slightly crosswise so it wasn't terrible. Reading other race reports apparently it's been much worse. Flying Mount went fine. What would you do differently?: Hammer it just a bit more. I hit it hard in spurts and then backed off some. Most of the bike I'm thinking, "I need to leave some for the run!". So, I slowed down to about 17 coming in the last 1-1/2 miles. I probably slowed a bit too soon. Transition 2
Comments: I rode the pedals in fine and dismounted. I tore into T2 and found myself running across the concrete, my feet flapping on the concrete and thought to myself, slow down buddy, it's hot now. The sun was out fully and it was warm. I knew I needed to bring my heart rate down so I walked the rest of the way, put on socks, got a last squirt of water and walked out of T2. It hurt my time a few seconds, but that's fine. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I was dying on the first 2 miles of the run. I was hot and had trouble keeping cool. I walked probably 7, 8 or 9 times. I was really struggling with heat and fatigue. Post race
Warm down: walked around, drank water and "Perform". Talked with people we know and cheered for my wife as she finished the 5150. What limited your ability to perform faster: HEAT - it hit around 92 today. Event comments: * I placed 3rd in the Clydesdale 40+ division! Despite my terrible performance I actually got a plaque! LOL * :-) I thought this was a pretty good race. The SWAG was ok, nothing different than what you normally get. I saw someone gripe about last years, but having done it now, I think it's fine. At the end of the day I don't do well in the heat and will have to rethink doing races in September. Last updated: 2012-06-17 12:00 AM

Got up at 4 am which meant only 4 hours of sleep. Uggh! Loaded up and drove down to Galveston. Had breakfast on the way, Oatmeal with raisins and OJ. We got set up quickly and spent time visiting with people we knew.
* The drawback I had with this race, which is really unique to me and my A/G and Clyde category, is that the first waves for the 5150 started at 7:30, but our wave for 40+ and Clydes was at 8:45. Man what a wait! And the day heated up quickly, too.
Walked and stretched some. Didn't want to over-do it as it was warm. I walked and stretched and was sweating more than I thought I should have been. The week before had been cool with temps in the mid-80's but with low humidity and 'coolness' in the air. But, the day before it started warming up and gaining humidity. Man, it might as well have been late August instead of late September.
