Swim
Comments: Swim went well. My wet suit really chaffed my arm pits before I made it to the docks. When I made it up on the dock the race crew was helping a challenged athlete up on to the dock. That athletes performance really moved me. What would you do differently?: More Body Glide in certain areas. Transition 1
Comments: Felt a little overwhelmed. This was my first full and was not sure what to do with my kit. Start temp in the low sixties. Arm Warner's or not? Sun screen- crap put that in the wrong transition bag. What would you do differently?: Note to self- sunscreen required in T1 bag. Bike
Comments: The wind was a bit more than I expected. It seemed no matter which direction we went there was a head wind. I spent more energy on the bike then I wanted to. What would you do differently?: I fought the wind a bit, and think I would lay back a bit if I could do it again. A power meter would probably solve this problem; I am going to look into one this off season. Transition 2
Comments: First time I clipped out and jumped off with shoes on my feet. Biggest mistake of the day was sticking sweaty bike shoes in a bag a drawing shut. That bag smelled foul when I opened it the next day. Run
Comments: I have to figure out how to run off the bike. Maybe I need to train some sort of walk run combination. I need to figure out long course bike to run fueling too. The three long distance races that I have done I bonk at some point on the run. Heart rate is always way over what I have trained. Post race
Warm down: Walked to car as fast as possible to get to a Taco Bell. I was jonsing a soft taco supreme something fierce. What limited your ability to perform faster: Heart rate would shoot well above my training zones. It was warm so I know my core temp was up, not sure how to deal with that. Event comments: This race is well organized and well run by Setup Events. I would highly recommend this race whether it is going to be your first full distance or you are a seasoned veteran. The volunteers were second to none. The aide stations were the best stocked of any I have ever seen. One would have to work pretty hard to get lost at any point in your race from the expo directions, setting up your transition bags at two separate locations, the morning announcements, the swim start crew directions, T1 support, T2 support, to race course support, these folks work hard to make racing as easy as possible. I tried to burn off nervous energy by walking around and striking up conversations with other folks.
I swam about 100 to 200 meter warm up. Water felt great.
