Swim
Comments: Since the swim is my weakest, took advantage of a swim buddy. Swam mostly side stroke, back stroke and a back glide. Swim buddy kept me from going off course. Came upon people while swimming and couldn't get around them. The time was far less than I expected. I was happy with it. What would you do differently?: Continue my swim training. 8 weeks prior was the first time I have ever swam. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't wear a wet suit. Put on sweatband, sunglasses, helmet, gloves fairly quickly. Wore shoes without socks. My transition area was far from swim finish and bike start and I just didn't have the legs to run. What would you do differently?: Try to get a better transition spot. Bike
Comments: Had fun on the ride. I had a powerbar strawberry banana gel that I had taped on the bike. Energy kicked in soon after. Felt strong on the hills. What would you do differently?: Work on speed. Goal for next race 15-16 mph Transition 2
Comments: Again, I am far from the bike finish but close to the run start, so that helped. Left my sweat band on and couldn't figure out why my had was so tight. What would you do differently?: Try to get a closer transition spot. Run
Comments: Calves were heavy. Unable to get a pace going in first two miles. Ate some blocks about a mile in. I think this helped me run the final mile. What would you do differently?: Run more. Get more fit. I didn't have any trouble during training running off the bike. I think the swim/bike had a lot to do with my weak run. However, even with walking/running, my time was good, for me. Post race
Warm down: Stretched in the food line. Had banana, burrito and a beer. Followed up with Muscle Milk Chocolate Light. Long walk back to my car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Needed to have trained more than 8 weeks! Event comments: It was my first triathlon. I did better than I expected. I can do better. Woke up at 3:45 AM. I loaded my bag and helmet the night before. Made up two bagels with peanut butter and fruit spread and a banana. Filled tires and loaded bike. Hit the road at 4:30. Arrived at remote parking site at 5:00. Walked bike to transition area. Ate most of 1 bagel. Had half banana 20 minutes before swim.
Mostly spent walking around, finding starts and finishes and orientating myself to my transition spot. Did a little stretching prior to swim.
