Swim
Comments: I took the swim very easy because I didn't want to wear myself out for the bike and run. I tried focusing more on technique. I was alone for the middle 50% of the race. I think my sighting was good, and the main pack took a slightly more outside route. They were still faster though. First 100m my sighting was bad. Got back in the pack afterwards. What would you do differently?: Put in more effort to keep pace during the swim. Wasn't trying to go hard this time, so I'm still happy with it. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit got stuck on me for a little while. It was my first time taking one off in a hurry, so I wasn't surprised at all. Stuffing the wetsuit and other stuff into a bag for them to take to the finish took a little time though. I had a huge towel, and it barely fit in with my wetsuit. What would you do differently?: Practice taking off the wetsuit more! Bike
Comments: Mountain Bike! I don't have a road bike, so I used my mountain bike for the race (one of two in the entire race!) Thought I had a good race and was able to keep up with a few of those fancy tri bikes. I went a little easy through some parts of it and ran out of gears a few times on the downhills. Pulled my left hamstring with about 4 mi to go and I had to slow way down. I probably could have been a minute or two faster otherwise. What would you do differently?: Use a road bike. My life would have been much easier (although I would have missed all the encouraging words of the guys zipping past on TT bikes) Mash a bit less. Not sure what happened with my hamstring, but a higher cadence with less force probably would have helped. Transition 2
Comments: Fastest T2 time out of all the Age Groupers! At least I won something... Probably facilitated by the fact I was already wearing my running shoes (remember: mountain bike) and I completely ignored my T2 bag when I didn't immediately find it. What would you do differently?: Maybe not even bother looking for my bag. Use something to make it more visible. Run
Comments: Whew! Saw my friend catching up to me about 2 miles in and I started booking it! I was running near my max HR for the whole run. Managed to keep just in front of him :) What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Cold towel and water provided right at the finish line. Burritos, fruit, and clif products after. Got my free massage about an hour later that really helped me loosen up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience Event comments: A great first triathlon for me and my friend. Looking forward to the next one! Last updated: 2012-07-03 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4am, 3 hours before the starting time. Had a clif bar and banana for breakfast, which is my standard pre-race food for rowing as well.
Got there with myfriends 1.5 hours early.
None really. Treaded water for a few minutes and took a couple strokes before the start.
