Pre-race routine:

Woke up early to have a bowl of cereal and banana.
Event warmup:

No warm up except some light stretching
Swim
  • 08m 36s
  • 383 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first open water swim and I was not prepared for the traffic. I prepared in a pool and this was a different animal. I panicked for a moment as people were grabbing my feet.

What would you do differently?:

I would start on either edge and swim my pace. I started too fast and had to slow down to go back to my swim. I also should do more sighting since I almost missed one bouy and went far out of line on the back stretch. I can improve this area greatly.
Transition 1
  • 03m 20s
Comments:

I took this fairly easy to make sure I was prepared for the bike by regaining control of my breathing.
What would you do differently?:

I just need to hustle to shave off a minute or two.
Bike
  • 40m 4s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Good solid ride for me. I had more left in the tank, but I was being conservative to have legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

The addition of some aero bars might assist my position. I could amp up the speed once I get comfortable with effort vs. energy.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

I was played it safe on this to avoid serious mistakes like crashing. A guy in front of my almost hit the pavement because he was rushing.
What would you do differently?:

I can be a bit more effective in this by watching people with more experience.
Run
  • 29m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran to the pace of my breathing and used a bit quicker step than normal. This made my run a bit faster than my training. Slight cramp in one side, but better breathing made that go away quickly.
What would you do differently?:

I was pleased with my progress. Just need more training time.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a few moments while drinking water. Had a few pieces of fruit and did some light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was not prepared for open water. I think losing more bodyweight will assist my run section.

Event comments:

I enjoyed the whole experience. I thought the race was the right size for my first triathlon in 6 years. This was my second triathlon and the first one I prepared for. It served as a good checkpoint for my October Tri.

I signed up for Clydesdale (I'm @204lb) and was surprised there were only a handful of people in the group. I think I'll sign up in the normal age group brackets next time.
