Swim
Comments: I think the swim went well. Likely 30-45 seconds slower than I wanted, maybe longer with the run time added in. But, overall, good swim. The majority of the swim was really crowded. I like to start swimming as soon as possible, because I can usually pass people that are running out/in. Today, there were rocks that felt sharp, so I started swimming early. My hands hit the bottom a couple of times, and some people got in front of me (I was at the front). This slowed me down, because I did pass all these people. I was a little frustrated here. I kept swimming until I could only see a couple blue caps (my age group) in front of me, I passed several of the mens group that started before us. It was way too crowded. Some men that weren't swimming well were stopped in the middle of the course and I almost swam over one. I know this is part of it, but its frustrating. I want to swim and swim hard :) I really can't draft, because I seem to get slowed down. Toward the end, I should have just put my head down and pushed it, but I kept thinking I was going to get off course. However, I didn't leave the water thinking I should have pushed harder. Felt strong, according to my husband I was around the 4th woman out of the water (0-34 age groups-they started us all together). What would you do differently?: Run a bit more before starting to swim-make sure the water's deep enough. Swim to the outside? Not sure what the strategy is for not having to pass so many people. Pull through and push, and swim hard. Put my head down and swim on the way back. Practice more OWS sighting-this might help me put my head down and swim. RUN from the water to the transition area Transition 1
Comments: Oh, the time was slower than I thought. I got to get this down faster-most in my age group were under 2 minutes. I guess my socks slow me down. Overall thought, I thought it seemed good-the racks were crowded though, so I moved twice to get out of the way of people trying to unrack their bikes. What would you do differently?: Put gloves on before running with bike. I debated even wearing them for this short ride. I probably shouldn't have? Not sure. Bike
Comments: I was pretty happy with my ride. I did seem to get passed, but by alot of men, so I don't know if they were from the start of the international or what. I guess, looking at the age group rankings, that I must have gotten passed by most of my age group, but I really didn't notice. I gave some advice to a girl who was struggling up the biggest hill on her mtn bike, she was spinning and bouncing all around, wasting alot of energy. I don't know if she appreciated it, but I felt good about it :) It did cross my mind to take it easier on the bike because I wanted to be able to run the entire run. Overall, I really just enjoyed this ride. I felt like I was really having fun. What would you do differently?: I obviously need to work on my speed. Advice from all you bike experts out there? I averaged 17.1 while others averaged 18 or 19. The #1 ranked women in my age group averaged 19.8. I know that climbing is another issue. I felt better about my climbing, but I would slow down, of course. Probably down to around 10-12 mph, depending on the hill. I think I need to move my seat back a bit, or adjust my cleat on the left foot. I'm having some numbness and keep trying to slide my foot back in my shoe. My right foot seems fine though. Transition 2
Comments: I think this went okay. Felt pretty good. What would you do differently?: Not sure? I don't have lace locks, so I could try these....My shoe came untied on the run. Run
Comments: I had positive mental thoughts the whole time!!!! When I got to mile 2, I knew I wasn't going to walk. I was a little miffed b/c I kept getting passed on the run (especially when someone in my age group would pass), but I was trying to focus on my goal time, and the fact that I was right on track to about meet it. I don't think I had a speedy run, which I expected, but it was a good positive run. Felt really good about it. What would you do differently?: Okay, so I was last in my age group on this run. I'm guessing I need more running and more bricks :) Post race
Warm down: Walked around, ate a bit, then walked around some more taking pictures of tri team members Event comments: HFP does a great job! Last updated: 2006-05-30 12:00 AM

Didn't get up when alarm went off, pressed snooze twice (because of events the night before) and getting up late just set the whole tone for the morning, or so I thought :)
My husband and I rushed around getting ready to leave-little did I realize barely leaving enough time to make it to packet pickup (which I normally do the day before, but...couldn't this weekend. I had bowl of instant oatmeal, two plain slice of raisin bread and part of a bananna. And, when we got about 5 min away, I realized I forgot my race belt, so we came back for it. That's when I realized how late we might be. That I might not get to race b/c I might not make the packet pickup. My husband drove, and I'm glad. He drove fast, saving me the 5 min that I needed to get in line before 7:30. The line was soooooo long. And we had coolers in the car that had to get down to our tri team tent. Big props to my husband for helping with that. He had to navigate around all the people rushing to get ready, people warming up, etc.
My event warmup was running to the packet pickup line, realizing how long it was, running back to the car to get my stuff, and running back to the packet pickup line. I was nervous, that they might close us out. And I really had to go the bathroom, porty potties were all that was available. The state park was doing work on the restrooms.
