Swim
Comments: A rectangle that ran out, turned and came back and then up on the beach. The first 725 meters of the out I was jostled some but I felt really good and thought I maintained good sighting and position. By the time we hit the turn somehow there just seemed to be alot of white and yellow caps bobbing around which made it a battle for 20 meters before the return part of the rectangle. Here I had some sighting issues - so much so that I took off my goggles and scissor kicked up to get a better look. Seemed much more aggressive the second part especially when some of the green cap guys overtook me. What would you do differently?: Get more OWS practice - I plan 6 or more mile plus OWS race events for next season - sighting and staying on course seem to be my biggest problems - repeatedly. Transition 1
Comments: I thought I was pretty fast - my transition was 9th fastest of the clydes, 213th in the field ... first time with a full sleeved suit and I had to take off and put my watch back on as it was on the outside of my sleeve ... What would you do differently?: Not care if I get satellite reception on the swim - maybe leave the watch mounted to the bike Bike
Comments: I think in these conditions on my road bike I could have hammered harder and had a faster result. The roads kept me from going aero until we hit the farms at mile 15. There were numerous turns marked SLOW with flag wavers that forced braking. I saw alot of guys with flats and a few appeared to have wrecked out on turns. I saw 2 guys walking with their bikes. My nutrition was the best I have ever done while biking - consumed all 24oz in my water bottle, ate half of a PR bar at mile 5 and the rest at mile 10 ... took Powerbar Gummies with the caffeine from mile 18 to the end. What would you do differently?: If I know the course is windy and the conditions are rainy I will use my road bike. I will bring both bikes with me to Pocono ... Transition 2
Comments: 11th fastest of the clydes - 377th versus the field. I sat down to put my socks/shoes on put on my hat and belt and went out. I guess I am just slow as molasses. What was awesome was hearing the vent leader was coming in 300 meters, 200 meters - his pace is a blazing 5:30! he is on pace to beat the course record, he is sprinting hard now and he has it (this is all paraphrasing but it got me pumped) ... as I ran out the winners was bent over and vomiting - AWESOME! What would you do differently?: HTFU Run
Comments: I brought my fuel belt with 4 bottles because in the weeks leading up to this race I have failed miserably when it has come to running bricks after the bike. The heat and humidity of July and August just relentlessly kicked my ass. This day however it was cooler, the rain had taken all the humidity away and the run conditions were ideal. The cautiousness on the bike had actually reduced my leg strain and I felt fresh. Only took water/electrolites from my bottles (I had 2 waters and 2 efuels) ... told myself to keep the pace sub 9 and go faster on the second half. This 10k time actually beat my stand alone 10k PR so obviously I was grooving (guess I need to run a 10k and really try to push it) What would you do differently?: Weather was ideal - best executed tri run I have had yet. Post race
Warm down: I grabbed a water and waited to cheer my brother to the finish. Had a few peices of bagel - chatted up with some Sunrise Tri guys/girls ... and talked to some other tatted up competitors. Stayed for the BBQ and raffles though I won nothing. What limited your ability to perform faster: The weather on the bike - on the swim it was just confusion and panic I guess on the second half. Event comments: Eventpower does all their races awesome but this one was stellar, my favorite one to date ... need to do a few more Oly's but I think this is the distance I prefer. Weather was horrendous on Saturday, the day before the race. Torrential rain, tornado warnings, flooding in some areas. Since the race was over two hours from where I live my brother and I set out to stay at his father in laws house which was about an hour away from the race site. We got there ate a pasta dinner and slept on the floor. I had a solid 7 hours of sleep and woke up had a Shakeology shake and some oatmeal raisin cookies - got dressed and we set out. It was raining riding there - we got there early enough to both grab the first spot on the rack and set up our transition areas - was cold and drizzling with wind guts.
I was cold - got my chip and body marked then put a sweatshirt on and reclined in the car - ate a clif bar and drank 30 oz of water while I killed an hour and a half waiting for the briefing. My warm up involved stretching my arms as I waited to enter my swim wave. Had an eGel and 6oz of water right before I went in to wade (waves went off every 5 minutes - I was in wave 3)
