Swim
Comments: Was really bad. Between not being used to not seeing much (very murky water), veering right and going a bit fast I got into a panic state. Which of course made the breathing worse and had to stop, twice. Ugh. I swam 3 sets of 450 yd the day before and 900 yd non-stop earlier in the week. So I was very disappointed that I had so much trouble. What would you do differently?: Need to slow down and do my pace. Since I'm just back to swimming I'm slow, and I just need to swim my pace. I was doing 2:10/100 yd in the pool on Friday for 450 yd, so this should have been no big deal and much faster. Need to find a way to get some OWS time and work on going straight without the line at the bottom of the pool. And beat the living stuffing out of the little voice in my head that says I'm going to drown. I'm not. I can swim much further and there are rescue people there to help. Transition 1
Comments: First tri in 24 year, so not surprised this was slow. The T1 time at this race was from the water up to the bike corral until out. Gives a good swim time reading. What would you do differently?: Put HRM strap on for swim, put bike stuff on a little quicker. Bike
Comments: Went much faster than I expected. I'm not fast, but just back to biking (5 or 6 weeks). I was planning on 18+ and hoping for 18.5, was very surprised to see 19.7 mph. I passed lots of people (not too surprising after my sucky swim), including two tri bikes. What would you do differently?: Not much other than more practice. Just need to keep logging the miles to get my speed up into the 20's. Transition 2
Comments: Other than almost getting run over by two bikers at the dismount line this went well. What would you do differently?: Not much, may be bit quicker, but with standard bike shoes and regular laces on my running shoes I won't be much quicker. I had a good bike rack position. Run
Comments: I was hoping to keep into under 30 minutes, so close, but not quite there. I did keep it under 10 min/mile, so I was glad to see that. The bike pace definitely ate into my run pace, but I'm a slow runner, so it was most likely a net gain. And running didn't feel weird after getting off the bike, so I don't think I pushed too hard. I've had brick runs that my legs felt really odd for the first 1/4 mile. My best 5K pace was a few weeks ago at 8:27 and I was in no way expecting to match that after swimming and biking, especially since that was a fast 5K course. What would you do differently?: Not much, at least nothing immediate. I need to keep working on my running to improve my speed. Post race
Warm down: Got a water at the finish line and just walked around. Oddly felt very good after just a couple of minutes. Certainly didn't feel that fresh during the run. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just practice. I've been running more this year than ever, but that's still not much. Just started biking and swimming about 5 or 6 weeks ago. In light of that I'm very happy with my results (well, other than the swim trouble). Event comments: This was very well organized. The volunteers and police in the streets were fantastic. We had two left turns and traffic was completely stopped for us with police at both locations. We made full speed turns safely at both. There were large signs warning traffic of the race and to use the left lane only, which they did. We never had issues passing. The post race food and such was a bit on the weak side, but other than that the organizers did a fantastic job. I didn't stay for the awards as I was meeting a college bud in town for lunch and "catching up". Last updated: 2012-08-27 12:00 AM

Shower, ate and drove to Goosepond, racked the bike and set-up in transition.
Short jog, ~250m swim. Water temp was good, but yucky stuff growing in it. Definitely not used much as a beach/swim area any more.
