Pre-race routine:

My GPS had arrival set to 1hr after the start time, so went through brief freak out en-route, but then arrived about 80min before race. Plenty of parking. Note the walmart on way for potty stop, and secret bathrooms at far end of parking lot.

don't park where they launch the boats.
Swim
  • 15m
  • 750 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

When I was new to the rodeo the open water swim + race day jitters were a bad combo. So if you are not totally confident in your swim I highly advise practice, practice practice. On race morning hop in the water, swim out 100 yards, and float before the start. you will make it. don't go in dry.

stay left after the turn. the straight shot to exit does not match buoys, and traffic is lighter.

and when you exit, know there is a 100yd uphill wet slog to the timing mat.
What would you do differently?:

more practice drafting.
Transition 1

Bike
  • 44m
  • 16 miles
  • 21.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I bought a used bike with Zipp 404 on front and Zipp Disc on back... oh. That's why all the fast people have these. now I get it.
What would you do differently?:

drank a full water bottle, which was a little too much for this gig.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 27m
  • 3 miles
  • 09m  min/mile
Comments:

I made a call and wore my legit track spikes. the ones with metal spikes from high school XC eons ago. Good decision.

Came out of T1 a little too hot and kind of blew up in the first 800M, then settled in for a reasonable pace. A mixture of overheating and maybe slightly too hard on bike.

But I broke 1:30... it was worth the trip.
What would you do differently?:

arrived too late to scout run course, other than first 400M. I know, a rookie move, but the race was more of a B race for fun than a A race.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

not prepared for run course.

Event comments:

Well organized. I think they bill this as a beginner friendly race, and it was. In my rack was a retired lady who almost went swimming with her race number pinned on (she was cute, it was her first race and she had fun). At the other end of the rack was the guy who came in 2nd. but we all finished.
