Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5, showered, had normal breakfast (6 egg whites and 1 whole egg scrambled, bowl of oats and a scoop of protein powder with milk). Had everything packed from the night before so left around 5:45 and grabbed a coffee and bagel for later. Kind of nervous when I woke up but that was expected.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition, found my friend Scott, talked, checked out the swim, where I was in relation to the transition exits, made sure I had my Gatorade on the, everything was systems go.
Swim
  • 15m 27s
  • 586 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, that's what I was scared of. I didn't do nearly enough to prepare for the swim and it cost me. Had a tough time getting out to the bouy, had to grab a surfboard for a minute, then headed parallel to land and had to grab another surfboard. I was on my back for a while and I think I was actually doing really well because I passed quite a few people once I got that down. I was running out of breath, hard time going more than 2-3 minutes, didn't feel like I was getting anywhere, it was brutal by all accounts.
What would you do differently?:

Get in the effin water more. Once a week, at least, I need to get a good OWS in from here on out. By far my weakest event. Fully believe the OWS cost me my goal time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Since I had my mountain bike I just got into my sneakers. I had a hard time getting the suit over the chip, my suit creeped up my leg a bit and the chip was exposed, exactly what I didn't want to happen, so it took me a few seconds to get my suit over the chip. Besides that though I thought it went off pretty smooth. Didn't get my cycling gloves on so I stuffed them down my shirt and rode with them like that.
What would you do differently?:

Have to make sure the chip is further up my leg so I can get the suit off with no issues next time. Besides that, it felt ok.
Bike
  • 47m 29s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 18.32 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike felt good, even though it was on the MB. After my super slow swim I at least was able to pick some people off on the bike. The only people that passed me were down in the aero position, no one cruised by me but I did plenty of cruising. I felt like I was the only one out there on a MB, and I didn't see anyone else in front of me with one. The pace felt pretty good the whole way, it was a really easy ride in terms of hills and such.
What would you do differently?:

Have my road bike. Would have made a bigger difference than the transition time I saved with my sneakers on. It was just tough to get low and get anything going and there was a decent breeze and I just felt like a sail the whole time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Super quick, parked the bike, took off my helmet, gulped some Gatorade and off I went. I don't even remember being in the T2 area.
What would you do differently?:

Not much with no shoes.
Run
  • 25m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

The run felt super slow, but judging by the results I guess I moved ok. Didn't have too many people pass me on the way out, definitely did more passing than got passed. Way back in some people worked by me, but they were flying so I was ok with that.
What would you do differently?:

In general, more bricks in training, specifically after 15 mile rides do a 5k. I was beat, my shoulders were sore, my legs were getting tired, I didn't have much left in the tank. I wanted to make a big final push through the finish line but it didn't really happen.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my fam and hung out for a while. Had a water, gatorade and piece of pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training, specifically on the swim. I felt ok on the bike and run, right around or better than I thought I'd be actually.

Event comments:

Awesome organization, everything was pretty well spread out, easy in, easy out, I hope every race is this smooth.
