Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5:30. Didn't sleep well, crashed on the floor of a hotel room with my sleeping pad and bag. Not the most comfortable.
Event warmup:

quick jog then swam a bit.

Good T2.
Run
  • 49m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was an absolute mess. My legs felt tired as expected coming off the bike. I was able to get it together before the first mile was over. I completely fell apart somewhere around the turnaround. I just couldn't go. Started feeling lightheaded and crampy, and was probably barely managing 8:30 miles. By the end I was so distressed I just wanted to finish. Two people in my AG kicked past me with less than a mile to go and I could barely summon the will to care. Finished absolutely disgusted with myself. Over 5 minutes slower than my last two races.
What would you do differently?:

I blame my lack of focused training over the last 4 weeks or so, particularly run training. I just completely hit the wall with 3 miles to go and had nothing to give.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt very overheated, poured water all over myself and layed in the shade for a bit. Started feeling a bit better, got some pizza and had to leave pretty quickly to meet friends back in SLC.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training regimen the last several weeks.

Event comments:

This organization has a new RD. I think he has improved an already excellent race. Everything was right on time, results were posted VERY quickly and post race events were better than they have been in the past. I only wish I were better prepared, I could have easily hit the podium.

Performance:
Navigation was tough, lots of extraneous buoys out there. I swam a bit wide on the way back, but overall a fairly decent swim. I suspect it was a bit long, but I don't know for sure. Water temp was very warm.

Almost exactly the same bike time as my first race this season on this course. Road bike v tri bike seems to be pretty much a tossup on this course.
Wind: Little
Course: Tough course to really crush the bike split. Rough pavement, one big hill and lots of false flats make for a pretty tough bike course, even if it is short.
