Pre-race routine:

Drove up night before and stayed with some friends on Lake Winnipesaukee. Out of bed at 6am, Drank some coffee and ate some instant oatmeal. Packed up and headed to race.

Noticed that wheel cover was coming undone so borrowed some Duct Tape from Randy. Debated just taking cover off. In the past I used the screws to fasten it (with tape also), but this time I tried just using tape. Not a good idea. Hoping it would stay put for the race.

Event warmup:

Quick swim. Water was warmer than I thought. Ate a gel 20 min before my wave was to start.

Comments:

This was an in water standing start. Moved close to front line. Tried to get to front at the start. Was in front at first buoy. I did get swum over by one person and another person grabbed my legs and yanked them backwards between 1st and 2nd buoy. Totally uncalled for. Not sure what that was about. But maintained my composure and kept swimming. I believe I passed both of these people by the last buoy. I think 1-2 other orange caps were ahead of me out of the water, but they were not in my AG. So far, off to a good start.
What would you do differently?:

still need to improve swim.

Comments:

Out of water and up ramp. Stated taking off top of wetsuit (2 piece), but it got stuck on my head and had to stop for a few seconds so I didnt run into anything. Rest of T1 went smoothly, but could be a little faster. Opted to keep shoes on pedals and go for running mount. Was a little worried about the gravel in T1, but didnt get any rocks in shoes.
What would you do differently?:

practice getting wetsuit off.

Comments:

It was cold and rainy. Hoped this wouldnt be a repeat of Mooseman where my arms and hands were so cold that I had trouble shifting. Seemed to warm up a little once I got going, but still felt cold.

Overall, I felt ok on this ride, but had trouble keeping power where I wanted to. could be related it being cold and wet. Made it up and over climb with no issues. Took it a little easy on the descent, but still hit 44mph.

About 200 yards from transition, I unbuckled shoes and took feet out. As I was getting closer, I was looking for the dismount line. It was really hard to see and I thought it was closer than it was. This is where things go horribly wrong, although I am not completely sure what happened. I know I hit a dip in the road while dismounting and braking and I was told I went airborne. I just know I went down really hard on the pavement right before the dismount line. A few people rushed over to see if I was ok and I tried to get up, but my calves cramped up big time (worse than a Charley horse). At this point I started to feel a lot of pain in my forearms and left hip, plus I could see that I had some good road rash. I decided my race was over and I would not continue.

EMT's came over to check me out. It didnt look like I had any broken bones or serious injuries. Aside from the pain in my arms and hip, my biggest issue now was that I was very cold and starting to shake. I think the dampness and cooler temps were catching up with me (note to self, why do I live and race where it is cold - I never seem to be able to warm up once I get cold). I was given a few blankets and the EMT's offered to let me sit in the Ambulance to warm up. They also gave me a heat pack. This helped a lot. The EMT's were awesome!

While I am glad that I was not seriously hurt and my bike appears to be ok (a few scratches on brake lever), I am still disappointed that I had to DNF and end my season this way. I was off to a good start and felt like I could have had a top 10 finish (perhaps even top 5 with a good run).
What would you do differently?:

Take it a little easier going into transition with the wet conditions.

Post race
Warm down:

After I warmed up, I headed over to the finish to see how my friends and teammates did and let everyone know I was ok. I then headed over to the food area for a made to order omelet, waffles and some hot coffee to try to stay warm.
