Swim
Comments: ...continuing from the warmup comments - add whatever time for standing around waiting for people to get into water. I was pretty upset once I was allowed to take the course. Went out too fast, I think everyone in the back 1/3 was pissed. Sighting seemed pretty good, but I never got into a good rythm and never felt relaxed. Ended up breathing on a two stroke pattern instead of the three I trained on. Tried to run climbing out of the water and almost fell - never pushed my legs that hard on the swim. Run to T1 was also included in the swim time which I think was probably closer to 12 minutes than 14, but I'm just guessing. My pool time for 400m is 8:50 on a regular basis. What would you do differently?: Make sure I'm at the front of the wave, at least to get in the water. I suppose this is only important for this event as it was single file down the dock to get to the start area. Double check wave info. Plan an on-shore warmup. Transition 1
Comments: Better than expected. Everything went very smoothly. No problems at all. Didn't forget anything. What would you do differently?: In the future I will have Tri specific shoes and plan on doing a running mount. Also probably won't worry about socks once I have tri specific shoes for the bike. Bike
Comments: If I have a strength, this is it. Hoped for 18 mph - surpassed my goal (18.5). Probably cooked my legs a little and I will use that excuse as some of the reason for my snail-like running (if you can call it running) What would you do differently?: Not much. Felt good. Might try aero bars and some geometry change for the next one. Base training to improve overall. Transition 2
Comments: Better than expected again. Almost ran down the wrong row, but caught it before I wasted very many seconds. A last squeeze from the water bottle and I was off. Too bad my legs didn't want to go with me. What would you do differently?: I'll probably pull my feet out as I near the dismount line and just hop off. I've done it a few times in training - doesn't seem too risky. Run
Comments: The moment I headed for the T2 exit I knew I was in trouble. My goal instantly changed from any sort of pace or time to simply "don't walk - don't stop" and that was my mantra for the entire run. It was a run, but barely - and I did manage a short "kick" for about the last 200m, but overall I was very surprised and dissapointed with the run. Hopefully losing 20 pounds (my overall goal) will make a drastic improvement. What would you do differently?: Just keep training and leaning out. Starting a base plan for at least 16 weeks - maybe 20. No more races this year. Need to build in some endurance. Post race
Warm down: I stopped. I got a cold towel. I looked for shade. What limited your ability to perform faster: Only 9 weeks of Tri specific training and no experience - this was my first Tri. This was more like lighting a fuse on a fire cracker - fizz... boom... I'm done. Now I have to actually change my body and install some endurance. Want to do another sprint next year and attempt an Oly. Also have MS150 training so it's time for a base. Event comments: Seemed like a great race overall, but I have a big problem with the swim start. We were all to walk down a narrow (3 feet wide) wooden dock with boat slips on both sides and everyone was to jump in at the end and swim about 25 feet to the start line. Aside from the snafu on my part of not double checking my wave and cap color - there were still dozens of people standing on the dock blocking my way to the water. Why did they blow the horn? It's not the fault of the people in the back that the people in front won't get their asses in the water. Why wasn't there someone in charge at the end of the dock pushing the slow pokes into the drink? I will take some of the responsibility because I know it is up to me to control the outcome of my race, but this was also my very first race and I was already a little confused about how it was all going to go. I'm pretty sure they held off on the start horn just to make it seem less screwed up - but based on the "countdown" he was giving us (1 min / 30 sec / 15 sec etc.) I know that was the longest "minute" in history. The start probably cost me 45 seconds to a minute. Grrrrrrrrrrrr Last updated: 2012-09-24 12:00 AM

Ok.. I know it's my first time, but there is a small rant going in here.
At packet pickup I was given a black swim cap. I didn't question this. This guy had one job to do - I figured he knew how to do it. So after the olympic distance starts were over, I start heading down to the dock for the sprint starts. No hurry. I hear the announcer call the first wave saying the group should have navy swim caps - but I thought I heard "Men 39 and under" in the same sentence. That's odd. That's my wave, but I have a black swim cap and all the other guys with black caps are just lounging around. They must have said "29 and under". But then I hear it again... "Men 39 and under - navy swim caps : 5 minutes". Hmmmmm... I better ask. So I push my way through the crowd - ask the nice lady working the timing chip checkpoint "did they say 29, or 39? I'm 39 - but I was given this nice black cap". She replies " oh - no problem - here's a blue one, but you better hurry!" Great! two minutes to start and I haven't even warmed up. So I slap the cap on and run down the dock... well this is nice. I'm dead last in line - the announcer just called "one minute" and there's still 30 people standing on the dock!!! Seriously??? "30 seconds - get in the water guys!" Nobody seems interested in getting in the water. "15 seconds" - I'm still 10 people from the edge of the dock. The horn sounds as I pull my goggles on and jump off the dock - but I can promise you they held off sounding the horn. Does this happen often? I really want to know how much time was added standing around waiting for people to get in the #%*&%!#ing water! - talk about a cold start! So... that is a really long way of saying WARMUP : NONE!!!
